Finally got around to playing computer games last night, too distracted for last month. Gave FarCry 2 another go, first half hour is rather dull and forced, then you gain freedom of action. Utterly brilliant.

Nothing beats slowly darting from cover to cover, getting closer to the objective before being spotted. The level of panic is real and you just have to run, potshots being taken at you all the time, only to find you've too well hidden your get away vehicle and the guys you were sneaking up on are now chasing you in a car...

Good for half hour bursts also.

Ya, i was thinking like short playing as in something that can be saved, and not something that in one half hour I might get through like 2 animation cut screens.

And Sabbra, my machine all in all right now was probably about $1500+. Intel nahelem processor, board and 12gb of ram alone ran me about $900. I've got a semi-outdated video card, was a nvida 8800gts, paid around $300 for it when it came out a few years ago, when I first upgraded out of AGP.

But anyways, so, if I want a good RTS stratagy game, what's out there?

Might wanna wait a few years for a few dozen patches, considering how the first one fared.

Civilization IV isn't RTS, it's turn-based, but you can save on any turn at any time. It's an awesome game.

 Yeah I kind of got that. I REALLY want to play it. But I need a better/faster system first of all. Better to wait, or else I'll get bored of ARMA2 before they fix it and before I can play it at high graphics details. It'd be a shame to suffer with low framerates and crashes for a few months and then give up, because it is an awesome sim.

My favourites at the moment are Dawn of War II and WoW. Signed up for the beta of League of Legends :D

I'm waiting for a very long line of rpgs and a Grand Strategy Wargame. The list would be like....Divinity 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Risen, Age of Decadence, Deus Ex 3, Arcania: A Gothic Tale, and Hearts of Iron 3. Also there's a Warhammer 40k rpg coming up but its for the consoles =(. I seem to be a crazy video gamer person thingy.

The really annoying thing is going into a games shop and asking for pc recommendations, they come up with nothing that I don't already know. It seems most of their knowledge is Xbox/PS3/Wii based :?

I'll try and recomend a couple. ^_^

The games i enjoy playing are:
Silent Hunter III / IV - Both submarine games, very open ended, very customisable, a lot of freedom and a great modding community at subsim.com

Image

Men of War - Lovely RTS, difficult but rich in details and very realistic. Lots of mods out, voice acting is terrible.

PS: You have a lot of RAM. 8O

Older PC games were better because the console culture is ruining some of the current PC titles, however I still believe PC better.

Here some good PC titles(old and new)

RPG:
Planescape:Torment(very old)
Baldur's gate 1 and 2(very old)
The neverwinter nights 1 and 2 and expansions
The Witcher (a must have!)
Oblivion
Fallout 2(old)
Fallout 3
The Last Remnant

First Shooter:

The Operative: No One Lives Forever I and II --------> best FPS/Stealth Games ever! Don't be fooled by the cheese box. Image

Half-life 1 and 2

Doom III

Crisis (you need a monster pc)

Stealth games:

Thief I and II

I admit tho, nothing beats the console title Metal Gear series in that genre.

Strategy games:

Emperor: Battle for Dune(old)

Warcraft III series(old)

Starcraft(old)

Empire Total War

Medieval II :Total War

Supreme Commander

Homeworld I and II(a must!)

Perimeter

Men of War

God games:

Dungeon keeper I and II (old but must have!)

Populous III (old)

Black and White II (bit boring tho)

Simulation:

ALL Mechwarrior games

Blasphemy.

But I'll let it slide, as you're comparing apples to oranges.

A great list. But you miss out the original Fallout (surely equal or superior to Fallout 2) and the incredible Thief, Deadly Shadows.

Thief 3 was a huge disappointment, IMO =/ The story was great as usual, and prettymuch the only thing that kept me playing the game...the gameplay mechanics, controls (!), level designs, theme (no steampunk??), user interface, immersion, etc. were all severely lacking...not to mention the bugs, of which the official patch only fixed one of them :x

I would probably recommend it to people who haven't played the first two, and want a sort of "lite" introduction to the series...but veterans all agree that Thief 3 was a "bunt instead of a home run", as Carl Wilson would put it.

Soooooo.....

I got Arma2. It looks amazing!! ! The second patch is already out and I did not see any bugs.

But.

I'm getting 3-4 FPS (unplayable obviously) with a Core2 2.66 and GeForce 8500 (256MB), and that's with graphics details set to LOW. High details give me pretty much 1 FPS or so. 8O

I need a quad core i7 and GeForce 295? :?

My recommendation:
Starcraft
Dawn of war 1 and 2
Audiosurf (ride your music!)
Uplink
Fantastic Contraption
Crysis (in small doses)
Unreal Tournament 3
Arma 2, but that requires lots of concentration and patience in learning a new way to fight.
