I got a 360!
Thanks for all the replies! (:
I've gotten consistently enthusiastic recommendations for Mass Effect and Fallout 3 from a ton of people - not just from a few people on here. I'm definitely gonna rent those (ASAP) to see if I love them. Fallout 3 looks especially awesome! XD
the difficulty is punishing though, so u wont lose any man points if you have to play through on easy.
...
i mean u wont lose any woman points.
Also if you are a fan of being able to sneak through the dark, picking off enemies aswell as use of knife and guns then I might also recomend 'The chronicles of Ridick, made by the same company as The Darkness.
EDIT: I watched a video review for it. It looks awesome! It is on my definitely-rent list. (:
Also, is the Riddick you are talking about for regular xbox or the 360? There were two up there so... I wasn't sure.
Well, back to The Darkness... How long did it take you to beat the game? The review said it wasn't extremely challenging but it was fun. Did you find it easy? I'm just wondering about your personal impressions.
(Everyone else, please feel free to chime in on any of my questions I'm tossing out - all input is appreciated.)
It (The Darkness) looks very gory, though, what with the eating hearts thing and, you know, mobster/monster dynamics.
I'm fine with gore, but I live with my fellow video-game nerd younger sister so... she probably would be a bit icked out.
I'm trying to aim for a bit of a balance of really fun, but brutal games, and games that are really fun, but also sister safe - meaning mild M or Teen rated. So far I have mostly the violent ones on my lists and I'd like to hear about a few more from the other side.
However... Viva Pinata sounds like it might be too far in the other direction though. Unless my impression there is wrong too?
I also just watched some reviews for Mass Effect (looks really cool! On the 'definitely rent' list) and Fable 2 (not sure yet).
A lot of people have recommended Fable 2 to me as well. It looks like it could be really good, and maybe even 'sister appropriate'. I don't own a regular xbox though, so I can't play the first one. Hopefully the sequel is self-sufficient?
Anyone have any impressions on this, or other game suggestions for me?
Also, playtime is a big deal to me - I'd like a game that will take me a while to beat. One that I can't beat in a single weekend. And one won't get old while I'm doing it. Hence why I love a lot of RPGs. (:

Well how old exactly is your sister. I guess The Darkness does have gore, The worst it gets is probably when the Demon arm eats a heart, when it decides to show it to the scene, the dark of the game kind censors it, you might cringe when being tortured in first person. The game encourages you to explore everywhere, and find notes with phone numbers on them that when used at a phone give a funny message and unlock bonus material. And one that can be tricky is that you can see several phone numbers on the side of buildings, that when you enter them they have an interesting umm, conclusion and Achievment, also easy to get lost. So it may take a good while if you keep it at a nice pace. It can be a good chalenge Lower levels usualy never get too tough, but some require a bit of thinking. And the hardest difficulty gives you simular health to enemies and a few shots kill you, so, you have to incorporate cover, headshots and alowing full use of darkness shield when in alot of fire fights by destroying lights.
I found it
The Chronicles of Ridick Xbox game was updated for the 360 and is still good, and many reviewers are saying that it has aged well, and since you havent played it, it can be a good game to play.
Viva Pinata can be strangely addicting, most will stay away because it looks too kiddy, but when I decided to play it after my parents bought it, I strangely became addicted to playing it. I got the obsession in doing perfect gardening, like best way to plant trees, and then getting certain rare pinata. It is pretty child friendly, though it being made by Rare the creators of games like Banjo Kazooie, it has a couple of dirty jokes.
I havent played the first Fable either and I found Fable 2 fun. As a warning your character can have sex when the scene blacks out and other person makes noise, and your character might catch an STD. The game is stuffed with jokes, and decisions can effect the world, such as giving warants to officer will clean up crime, while giving them to a criminal will fill it with dirty bussines and whores of both gender.

It's not girlfriend safe or wife safe either. Romantic partners don't like it when you spend time with their videogame counterparts.
EDIT - Forgot to mention - don't buy Fable 2. It has so many game ending bugs that never got fixed that it really really sucks. You might get 75% of the way through the main quest only to run into a story blocking glitch. Rare never acknowledged many of these and never fixed them, so it's a huge waste of money to purchase the game. What's there is fun, but out of 6 characters, I was able to complete the game 100% only once. The bugs are that bad.
I don't know what it is, but I just can't figure out Fallout 3. I enjoyed the beginning, but now that I'm out in the real world I'm finding it difficult to accomplish anything. I wander around, run into large groups of enemies, and either sneak past, or get killed after running out of ammo. If I successfully sneak past, then I'm fine until the next large group of enemies gets me. I love the Hero system for RPGs, and it definately favors the larger group in combat, but it sucks to be the lone guy when all the raider parties have 4 or more enemies in them.
My sister is 14. She regularly watches the Simpsons and watched me play through Resident Evil 4 (except for some parts of the medical area - where you use the infrared scope to shoot the spiny guys with the rifle. I told her to cover her eyes then but she prob could have handled it. In fact, I bet she peeked anyway and she's not mentally scarred yet.)
I would not watch South Park with her probably, but almost anything below that in sexually offensive/explicit humor she probably wouldn't be phased by.
I'm not worried about her innocence being corrupted or whatever - some things still go over her head - but pretty much I'd consider 'sister safe' as:
-humor less than or equal in crudeness allowed in The Simpsons
-Sexual content as/less explicit than in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and/or other regular channel TV shows. (In other words, allusions/references to sex = OK. But not explicitly depicted as in True Blood, for example)
-violence not too much more gory than in RE4.
Does that help?

They've tried to fix it up a little since the epidemic, yes?
Well the Jasper model (latest version) is suppose to have mostly dealt with the RROD problem, due to using less power and some minor adjustments to the motherboard etc....
Ill be getting a 360 in a few weeks during the after Christmas sales
Congratulations on your console purchase. Lots of games on the XBox 360 and more on the way. Just buy the games you like the look of. Plenty of different genres. Check out some game review sites. VGChartz is a great site to check out for game reviews and it has console sales numbers which are updated weekly.
I own two XBox 360s along with 24 games. I also own a PS3 with 4 games.
Anyway have a nice day.
