I canceled WoW because I grew tired of the fact that to advance beyond a certain point, you had to group with other people - and if you hadn't been treating the game like a job, working at learning all the layouts and all the battles and how exactly to play your particular skills, out you were booted. There was no learning curve, either - in the very first dungeon for the Alliance, the old castle in Silverpine where you were supposed to gather materials to make a lvl-14 item, I got booted after the second room for confessing that my 15th-lvl Paladin didn't really know all the tricks to holding aggro yet.

I also discovered Champions Online, a superhero RPG which at the time had just gone to a hybrid Free-to-Play/subscription format. You can play on the Silver level indefinitely, all the way to the level cap. If you choose the free Silver level, your character will, of course, be an Archetype, one of eight (soon to be nine) predefined character types with pre-established power progression (although at some levels you'll have a choice between two powers - for instance, a Behemoth, a big strong brawler, will at 11th level have to choose between Roomsweeper, a massive punch that can send all enemies in front of you flying, or Thunderclap, which generates a sphere of concussive force that damages all enemies within 15 feet in any direction). You will also receive Advantage Points, which can be used in the Powerhouse (the training center) to change an aspect of one of your powers, either making it stronger or making it do something else as well (for instance, there's an advantage on Thunderclap that increases the damage within the first 10 feet, then makes the last 5 feet less powerful, but changes the damage type from Crushing to Sonic, which is more effective against certain enemies). Silver players get two free character slots; also, there's a special promotion running now (one paid Archetype per week is being made available to Silver players for free for that week), and if you log in before November 3, you get an extra character slot for free (so that Silvers who've used all their slots won't have to delete a character to participate).

If you choose to subscribe at the Gold level, you get access to all sixteen (soon to be eighteen) Archetypes, as well as the ability to create a Freeform character, selecting powers freely (with certain built-in limitations) from all the power trees, as well as choosing color effects for your powers. You'd also get more costume pieces for free (not all of them, of course, but more than a Silver), and eight free character slots, as well as a stipend of 400 Cryptic Points per month. The cost of a Gold subscription is the MMORPG standard of $14.99/mo, although I believe there's a slight discount for buying several months' worth at a time. If your subscription ever lapses, you're given the opportunity to retrain some of your characters back into Silver for free (if you're Freeform or a paid Archetype, you'll have to retrain to a free AT or one you've purchased with Cryptic Points from the C-Store), and you can switch back to Gold again later.

Of course, there's always the option (which I plan on taking when I get my next tax refund) to purchase a Lifetime subscription for $300. A Lifetimer gets sixteen character slots, all the benefits of Gold, and access to two extra costume pieces, as well as the Lifetime insignia being available for chest and certain shoulder pieces. The other benefit to Lifetime, of course, is that you never have to pay a monthly fee again...

One thing I like about the game is that there are no factions, and no open-world PvP - we're all superheroes. And until a couple of the later lairs (Nemesis Convention and Therakiel's Temple), you don't need to group to do anything. You can, if you wish, but you don't need to, and if you do, nobody's riding you about filling a particular role - what you do is dictated by your character type (Behemoths get in there and punch, Infernos throw fire from a distance, and so forth). You can get a feel for it with the Open Missions, things that happen in the world that anybody passing by can get in on without having to join anything. (In fact, sometimes it happens just because you're in the right place at the right time - Lightning picked up credit for completing the open mission "A Bullet Bound For Bisselle" because he happened to be running at Superspeed past City Hall just as the heroes finished saving the mayor.)

Also, if you actually like PvP, there are the Hero Games, a group of PvP arenas you can sign up for. They are divided into Archetype Games and Unlimited Games, because a well-constructed Freeform character can wipe the walls with almost any AT without breaking a virtual sweat. Get beaten, and you pop back to the respawn point, where you can rejoin the combat. Everybody gets Acclaim, which can be used to purchase special rewards, whether they win or lose. (Winners get more, of course...)

At the moment, my account (@JonSills) is Silver. The only character I'm playing on it is Mutandis, a Silver character using the Free Archetype Rotation program. (This week, he's a Savage, with claw attacks and rapid healing. Next week, he'll be a Void, with Shadow powers and the ability to summon creatures of shadow to help him. The week after that, I think, is the debut of the new Unarmed Martial Arts AT, the Master. And so on...)

I see...That sound a great game i must try it someday

LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online) is fun, and not very expensive. link to the game site
It has pretty scenery and relaxing music, and lots of quests. It's particularly good if you like LOTR, as all of the locations are based on the world of Middle Earth, and the player characters are all humans, elves, dwarves, and hobbits.

You can play for free without any noticeable restrictions until about level 25, and then there are quest sets (by zone) available for purchase (which are reasonably cheap for the amount of play time you can get from them). You can also choose to subscribe if you want to have no questing restrictions, for $10-15/month (depends on if there is a package deal when you subscribe). The quest sets are great if you only want to play a little because they are just like buying a video game -- you've bought them and don't have to keep paying monthly for access to them. Only some quests are hard to get groups for, like the ones in Angmar. But there are lots of quests that you can solo instead. The player community seems pretty good to me (I have a hunter on the Windfola server).

I play Runescape but sometimes I feel like quitting and have quit a few times.

I do not do any group activities when I have to track down a group or work with a team. The only group activities I do are ones where I can quietly do my own thing without talking. Some minigames are like that.

I won't get vent or skype or any of those chatting programs. I wouldn't even get them to talk to my ingame friends and I certainly wouldn't to team a boss or whatever.

I tried WOW, didn't like it, and if I had to team up with other people it's better that I quit.

How about Rift? It's practically a WoW clone. (I played some of it when it was out in Beta.)

If you can stand to wait for an undetermined amount of time then Guild Wars 2 seems like a viable alternative.

I am a hardcore EQ2 player, never played wow because the elf ears really disturb me (and eyebrows) but I did try rift, its ok . . . really good way to mix classes but the lvling rate really sucks to me. Runes of magic is FUN, but expensive in the end. Its all about spending marketplace items. Eq2 is 15/mo or $100 a year, i got a one year. Permafrost is a great server, raiding not required to have fun through the extensive maps either.

I'm playing Ryzom but its definitely not a wow clone. It's very comparable to Star Wars Galaxies in terms that you can spend most of your time as a crafter class forever. Also it's free to play up to level 125. Course if you're very graphics anal then it might not be for you since it was released way back in 04.

I have the same problem. When it comes to WoW, once you get beyond casual gaming, and want to start seriously raiding, most guilds require Vent. Not only does this pose a problem for me in regard to social skills, but also the mentality of a lot of players is terrible. You can always find nice people, yet it's the others who get in the way and make the game miserable. I never know how to deal with irrational people, or bullies just trying to show off, or the racism, or sexism. I can't count how many times I've been in a raid, or pvp, and someone told another player to stop flapping his fat lips, then called him n****r. One guy even threatened to hang someone else "like they did in the old days." Or called a girl b***h and told her to go back to the kitchen. And this is just in text. I can't comprehend having to deal with those people in voice chat, can't comprehend how I'd respond. I have an account that I let go inactive on and off, just stop paying. Once I even deleted a lvl 85 that I got back after being hacked. Here is something I was thinking about tho. Why not start a guild specifically for people with autism or AS? No Vent required. I bet you'd get a lot of requests to join, then you can play with others of like mind.

I've quit WoW as well. To put it simply, I could never find decent people to play with - nearly every player I met on that game was elitist and/or immature, and the few decent people I DID know quit after Cataclysm came out. I really had no reason to continue playing.

You can try going outside, it's actually quite fun. Try hiking.

In all seriousness, though, I never ever felt comfortable playing any games online with other people. I play video games, I used to game a lot more than I do now, but I don't really like playing against other people. People tend to be a**holes online gaming.

Please ditch MMO's for good. I managed to rack up 150 days of gameplay in Runescape.

I look back and nod my head in shame at how much of my life I wasted.

I went outside once. It wasn't that great. The graphics were okay, but the gameplay sucked, and the quest-giveres were awfully hard to find. I just don't see what the big deal is.

150 days? I'm up to over 300 days of Runescape in almost 3 and a half years. I'd have more if I hadn't quit 3 times. At this point I have 7 99s left to get a maxed account and I'm going for 200 million firemaking experience.

The wasted time doesn't bother me. If I hadn't been playing that I would have been playing a different video game.

Deacon, I tried going out once. I saw this shadow above me and I thought it was deathwing. Then something green and gooey fell on my shoulder. Turns the shadow was only from a pigeon. :?
