They still exist, they just have a habit of being a bit obscure, often as dowloadable games, though Mario still loves it, and I think that the recent Rayman game may have been an interesting return to the genre.
Thought I might also post this video for lovers of the sidescroller.

I was talking of such things as Shantae 2. But yes, Contra 4 is pretty good, too.

3d all the way i say. i find it crap with they put a 2d game on a system that can handle more then that. but as far as focusing on graphics far to much i agree, blue ray disk can store twice as much info, and it is wasted on graphics alone.
meanwhile they could put like two ps2 games worth of content on a blue ray disk. graphics only can hold your interest for so long, some of my fav games don't look holy hell pretty but are fun and addicting as hell.
minecraft is one of them it has 16 bit colors but you can burn hours easily on it because almost anything is possible in it. we need more games that inspire creativity and imagination like this.

There are things you can do gameplay-wise that can't be done with 3d games. And generally the artstyle/atmosphere is much better with a 2d style. E.g. Limbo, Outland etc.

artstyle and atmosphere are better... how? sure 3d models look like crap with outlines i agree okami shows that easily.
but honestly i get into a game a heck of alot faster in a 3d game. and i started out playing 2d once i got my n64 and my first 3d game i never turned back. i have a few 2d games still, but not much. the closest i get to 2d is super smash bros anymore. but my fav thing about 3d games is being able to see how big something is compared to you. like in minecraft and terraria i can make a tower in both terraria is fun and addicting but building stuff for fun is not as rewarding as it is in minecraft, in minecraft i can build i huge tower look up at it from the base and feel almost like an ant or go to the top and view the world around me in a birds eye view.
both are awesome games but minecraft wins by a hair in my eyes. something is just cool about looking down on the world from a structure you just built. but as far as combat and action terraria wins everytime. not to mention you can use 1 character and keep all your items from world 1 to 100, minecraft needs this feature badly..

I got the platinum trophy a couple weeks ago in the PS3 version of "Rayman Origins". Now I'm playing through Rayman 3D on my Nintendo 3DS.

I don't think one type of game is really better than the other. It all comes down to personal preference, and that makes it entirely subjective. I used to pick fully 3D free roaming games just by default, but after playing a ton of old school games as well as a lot of newer ones, I can see that the strengths and faults of each are there, and the only truly bad games have only the creators to blame.

Minecraft is a special case. It's not a typical anything. In my mind I was comparing games like Limbo, Outland, Rayman etc. to games like Jak and Daxter, Prince of Persia etc. When I talk about artstyle.... first, I don't think Minecraft excels in this. Very basic visuals. It's main strength is just the scope of block building gameplay and how the player can interact with that. When I talk about atmosphere I think the artstye and overall 'experience' of 2D games are better. More creative, more appealing in general. At least in modern games. I have no idea what Terrarria is so I can't exactly comment on that. The artstyle and atmosphere of modern 2D platformer games are outstanding. Most of the games I've seen have really had a lot of effort put into them.

terraria is like 2d minecraft with awesome combat and bosses. so basicly one is a 3d sandbox the other is a 2d sandbox. also with art style i was more refering to the outlines around the models in okami which suck the lines are to damn big and distracting. i hate cartoonsish 3d renders.
outstanding i wouldn't say that at all but whatever. i can hardly get hooked on almost any 2d game there is no atmosphere to me just a character running in front of a slideshow. in 3d games the world is all around you, you can go in any direction you please, games like fallout 3 and elder scrolls wouldn't be the same without that. to me 3d games have more depth. portal is the best example i know of the first game has virtually no story at all, you have no clue who you are and some disembodiment voice is talking to you. at first you suspect something is wrong even though you have no clue about any story at all. by the end you are praying for a way out of the hell hole.
only one character ever talks, glados who is also never seen till the very end. the game was thought to fail as soon is it was made but it didn't. but i have never been more effected by a game till i played portal. other games have effected me but to lesser extent. but as far as a game where the gameplay itself builds the story from nothing portal is the best example i can give. that to me is a work of art.
