Don't like the way video gaming is heading

So much said, so little memory span.
I'm really actually glad more games have online components. And more games are adding in local split-screen like the old times, so hurray for that (Though this is actually bad for FPS games from my experience, as they purposely half the field of view... ugh.). However, DRM, or however it's spelled, and online activation is hurting games and gamers. And I've SEEN developers find other ways to prevent anti-piracy. I just can't think of any off the top of my head.
These DLC need to go away. The problem is that people are willing to pay to win. E-peen and all that, ya know? And most "gamers" that play CoD and Fable and the like, are really just choosing to not even try to be less oblivious to the fact that they're paying for things already in their game, or that should have been a part of the game from the start. What we need is a big company to release a huge game that will attract tons of people and show them that they can truly get a lot for their money, without DLC. Too bad Mass Effect apparently also had DLC that added onto the game, in the end.
Cell phone games I can't really stand, either. However, if we're talking about games on tablet-like devices or mini-computers, I don't really mind. As Penny-Arcade said (I think it was Gabe who said it.), "You buy one game for $40 and I'll buy 40 games for $1 and then we'll see who's having more fun!"
Well, not all games are worth their coin, but some can be, considering their price. And if you're all out of hand-held games to play, these can be a good replacement. I just don't think that people should put games that clearly would do better on consoles, on mobile/tablets/hand-helds. It just ruins the game itself with bad controls.
Digital downloads are, in part, a good thing for me. There's no less anti-piracy on them than there is CD's and the like. You can still have serial codes and whatever else you want. This makes it easier for players to get their games, even when their CD's break (If there is a CD/DVD version of the game.).
However, at the same time, console games should not have digital downloads. As some have probably seen before, Microsoft doesn't always keep games on their online service, and I'm pretty sure the same goes for Sony. So that means you lose out on your purchase if something happens to it and you need to re-download it. And of course, they never let you actually back-up your games and downloads. And while the internet will always be there (Not counting some catastrophe or whatever.) for people to recover the data if the main site is lost, Microsoft and Sony hold all the data themselves, so if their service goes down, everything goes with it. Not as secure, to me.
I remember finding that video awhile back and showing it to most people I knew at the time. I agreed with it completely, even though I generally suck at Quake as I never owned it.
And I agree totally that forcing gamers to buy certain DLC if you bought your game used is complete and utter bull. Another way they're charging us more for the same games. Games used to be cheaper than the current market price, too, if I remember right.
I guess the last thing I have to say is that I don't get the data mining thing. I never connect my game accounts to anything on Facebook except Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for that silly "game." I set my privacy settings up and I say no to letting Google or Facebook use any data of mine for actual use elsewhere or for sharing data with others, etc. So why does everyone seem bothered by it, when you can just choose not to participate? Sure, others do to "help improve" the quality of the service, but that's their choice.
Anyways, yeah... games need to go back to what they were. I would love to see a new FPS be as good as the old days. And I would like to see games as quality as they were in the older days, just in general. People whine about "why do you obsess over the old, noob?" but they never fail to realize that we complain because it's sad that a game 10-20 years old is better than present. THAT is why we complain.

The thing is games tend to e held to a much higher standard of quality which in turn leads to better games. Old games did not have that. We just need to not buy overpriced DLC and pay $60 for games with a 5 hour lifespan. Easy to do if you read reviews and watch gameplay videos before buying.

And GoG.com, practically every classic short of Xcom and some of the old Star Wars games (Dark forces) but guess what? They're all on steam!. Between those two services you can play all the best games for a price equal to several current games.
To right

Yeah I bought LittleBigPlanet 2 recently and can still enjoy the experience on my own... it's just unfortunate that some unlockables are only obtainable with more players...

The changing trends are a double-edged sword. I like how some video games are becoming more cinematic with more focus on acting, but I don't like the intense focus on online multiplayer mode, the overuse of swearing and the fact that FPS games exclusively focus on nazis and RoboCop lookalikes.
What's better is that it's become so easy these days to make your own simple arcade-ish video game using game maker for example.
It really opened a world to me.
There is nothing more fun than designing your own damn games and sharing them with your friends and letting your friends share theirs with you.
I don't like it if it means we're going to get more games like Final Fantasy 13 and Mass Effect 3, the latter omitting a final boss because it felt "too video game-y". I love a lot of stories in video games, like Xenogears, Planescape Torment and FF6 but that doesn't mean they are completely focused on being like interactive movies. Alright..maybe the first two aren't the best examples but hopefully you get my point.

I didn't refer to interactive movies, but games with solid acting, good story lines, character development and epic soundtracks, like the Uncharted games. 15 years ago, this was only found in high quality adventure games.
The reason a lot of games have a multiplayer component even if previous iterations strayed from such a thing or if the feature feels "tacked on" is that gaming developers and publishers want more money. Having a multiplayer feature deters the used game market and creates a greater sense of "value" for the general consumer. As for games becoming more common on iOS and phones, that's actually a direct result of development becoming more expensive and games made for an iphone are actually cheaper to churn out, which is why the indie market is so big right now. DRM is becoming more entrenched and user frustrating, with many companies asking for brutish requirements from paying customers. It's hard to see where the boiling point is on this issue, so only time will tell.
That's just a quick overview. I think overall gaming has become more accessible and as long as we keep a sharp eye on companies and spend money properly we'll ensure a bright enough future to be satisfied with. Digital distribution has definitely helped create massive venues in choice and value, and I think that's where most of my positive feelings come from. It's enough to occasionally overlook the negative side of the industry at its current state.

I am more annoyed with companies that just make movies with almsot no gameplay, like the PS3's The Walking Dead and Back to the Future episodes 1-5. I got them both free through Playstation Plus and I ahve no damn clue who would even buy this kind of crap.

I think Back to the Future is an adventure game much in the vein of Snatcher, Bladerunner (the game), The 11th Hour and the Lucas Arts games like Monkey Island. Can't comment on the Walking Dead though. I personally miss adventure games and space sims the most.

I don't like digital downloads. I want my game on a disk or cartridge or whatever in my house.
If things change too much instead of playing new games I'll sit in my house and play my hoarded collection of old games that aren't like that.

We've built up thousands upon thousands of games before this trend started.
I better get started on my old games then.

I just think it is wrong to sell a game that later down the line gets additional content for a bit of a cash in and then if sales go well, release the game with the content at the same price the original game cost in the first place.
Don't see how it's justifiable... what should happen is when they do this, all DLC related to the game should be free.
I can see a sticky thread approaching.
