Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, virtually all wrpg stories are garbage(along with most other aspects of those games). Well, I suppose I can't judge the Mass Effect series, since I haven't checked it out yet, but every wrpg I've come across has failed to impress me with its story. A lot of modern jrpgs fail in that department too, but I can think of a ton of jrpgs that I've played over the years with stories that put Skyrim, Dragon Age Origins and Fallout 3 to shame. Skyrim's the only one out of the three I managed to get some enjoyment out of, and that's only because it's fun to mess around in. Ironically enough, that's the only one I didn't pay for either, since I received it as a Christmas gift from a friend of mine. I certainly don't share the same affinity for it as he does, but I do consider it an improvement over everything else I've played wrpg wise. Long story short, I decided quite a while back to stop wasting money on those kinds of games, since, like with fps, I just don't get the appeal of them, and find them beyond overrated.
Anyways, back on topic, I prefer to game alone. I guess it's because that has always been the case for me. I've only ever been able to play multiplayer games with people when I invited them over, or went over to their place. Otherwise, I've always been on my own. Now that it's an option with online play, I still don't care for it, aside from being able to play with some of my forum friends a couple times a week, which is actually pretty cool. For the most part though, I prefer to game alone. A game doesn't have to have a good story if the story is not the focus, but I'd rather the quality of the singleplayer portion of a game not be sacrificed, just so that the game can have multiplayer. In fact, not everything needs multiplayer. The whole notion that it does is ret*d. There's a time and a place for it, and there are games that lend really well to it, but not all games do.
I guess I never really got into the competitive spirit that these multiplayer games revolve around. I've been gaming for 20 years, but I'm not that great at multiplayer. On the other hand, I can tackle some pretty challenging singleplayer games head on, from Contra to a proper SMT game. I don't always play games for the challenge though, which is a good thing, since the vast majority of modern games are designed in such a way that a monkey could beat them. It's hard to believe now that there was once a time when beating a game was a legitimate accomplishment. Even most tributes to older games are simpler in terms of difficulty. Demon's Souls really made people cry? Wow, modern gamers are pathetic. To be fair, it's the fault of modern devs, since games are so easy now that people are used to games being like that. That doesn't mean I can't enjoy most modern games. Quite the opposite, really. I tend to play games to relax, so I can sit back and enjoy games like Uncharted just fine.
Great thread, but I would like to point out that the title gave me a different impression. I'm glad I decided to check it out anyways out of curiosity.
