Dragon Quest Monsters series. Especially Dragon Quest Monsters 2 for the Game Boy Color.

So much better than Pokemon.

Persona is an amazing game for people who play it, but most people dismiss it without a second thought at first >_<

Dwarf Fortress is...

Well, you'll see.

Dwarf Fortress, the game with a learning cliff so steep that once you figure it out, you've put in too much effort not to enjoy it.

I've heard about underrated exclusive PS3 games Starhawk and Heavenly Sword and 360 games Kameo: Elements of Power, Perfect Dark Zero, and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.

Played 999 and it's sequel - And I dare almost say the sequel actually outdid the original. Can't wait for the next one ^_^

Well, after you brought it up, I went out and bought it. I got it yesterday actually, and have already unlocked one ending(well, more of a to be continued ending). What I like about this version of the nonary game, is that it puts more emphasis on whether or not people should trust one another. There was some of that in 999, but I think the need to work together at a given time overshadowed that. There isn't an overarching time limit this time around, and time limits for the chromatic doors are generous, but there's still a sense of urgency, and I think it's even greater, since it sounds like one particular twist from the end of 999 doesn't apply here. VLR benefits from the move to better hardware. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two versions of the game, but I got it for the 3ds. Heck, I love this series enough that if I were to get a vita, I'd probably get the vita version too.

I think I prefer the anime/manga style characters in 999 to the 3d character models in VLR, especially when it comes to the still-frames in the novel sequence, but I like the 3d effect for the environments. Even with dual audio, I'm not sure how I feel about having voice acting, but I suppose it had to happen, given the hardware the game is on. I wish I didn't have to select my preference every time I load my file though, and it'd be better if it could be changed back and forth via an in-game options menu. Story and character wise, VLR is on par with 999, so no complaint there. I like the option to go back to any crossroads in the game, as opposed to having to play through it again from the beginning every time. A neat twist is that I found out that going back and changing my choice at one point didn't yield the result I was expecting, since another character did something different that time around.

Apparently VLR has 24 endings, which I think is 3x what 999 had, so that's neat. It's neat getting to know Alice as a character, and I look forward to finding out if that myth about her is true. Clover's appearance is also a nice throwback, as is Schroedinger's cat. Clover's different though. I played 999 a while ago, so I can't remember how old she was then. It's possible that she changed over the period of time between the two games. I'm noticing some overlap with character archetypes, despite the cast consisting mostly of different characters, though the new cast is different enough from the old cast. Overall, I'm enjoying the game, and even put the other games I've been playing on hold, because I couldn't wait to play it.

I played every single one of those (hell, I used to be addicted to Vagrant Story) and I agree with you.

A VERY underrated game for PC is Giants: Citizen Kabuto. It is mostly a 1st/3rd person shooter, but it has RTS elements and some racing levels that are actually very well made. The soundtrack was composed by Jeremy Soule (from Guild Wars and The Elder Scrolls). Besides, the cutscenes are among the funniest I have ever seen. Here are some videos:

Another great game is Sacrifice. It is a mix of RTS, 3rd person shooter and RPG. Actually, you could say it was a precursor of the MOBA genre:

The Timesplitters franchise.

I poured so many hours into Timesplitters 2 during middle school. The missions are pulpy yet entertaining, the multiplayer challenge games are fun, the music is fantastic, and I LOVED the Map Maker. It was primitive, but it was a great creative outlet that has made me interested in game design ever since.

So many of you brought up some of my favorite games. Timesplitters, Mega Man Legends, Legend of Legaia, Musashi, Threads of Fate, Final Fantasy Tactics. I also loved Gregory Horror Show (I had the import version on PS2 years ago. Shame that Capcom didn't release it here like they started to).

I could go on and on about Legaia and Megaman Legends especially. I've literally beaten MML over 50 times.

Well, I've been on a bit of a psp kick lately. The new Corpse Party game, entitled Book of Shadows just came out and I've been playing a bit of that, since I love the first game. I've reserved a copy of Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi, and have decided to go back and do other routes in Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, since I had only gone through Saito's route. 2013 is actually looking like a strong year for niche titles. I'm sold on Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, but may have to wait on that one, since Hyperdimension Neptunia: Victory and Atelier Ayesha are on their way too. Oh, and Etrian Odyssey IV for the 3ds.

Alan Wake. Not an underrated game, but I rarely meet anyone who has played it.
