I don't think it's what the original post means by "genre", but my favourite genre is puzzle games. To me, a "true" puzzle game has the following properties:
(1.) It is impossible to lose your progress.
(2.) Very little skill is required.
(3.) The gameplay revolves around learning the rules of the world, and then exploiting them.
(4.) The correct solution to an obstacle seems obvious once you have figured it out.

Some of my favourite puzzle games are The Incredible Machine, Portal 2, Braid, and Antichamber (which just came out).

Strategy games. Especially 4x.

I'm mostly into family-friendly or fantasy games like "Super Mario" and Zelda", but I also like both "Street Fighter" and "Mortal Kombat". I still play the NES version of "Tetris" quite a bit as well.

Shmups, particularly danmaku or bullet-hell types.
Fighting games (the genre I'm best at), typically games not done in the Capcom style of design
Turn-based strategy
4X type strategy
Puzzle games, both of the "solve this" and "falling block/orb/thing" type.
Platformers
MMOs
Mobas
Anything that plays at all like Minecraft\

Genres that I DONT like are: FPS, sports, and JRPGs.

Can I just say Nintendo for a genre? I love damn near every Nintendo game I've played ( and by Nintendo I do mean owned by Nintendo, not just Nintendo system versions of games... )

Otherwise I'd say RPGs ( especially JRPGs ) since I'm more consistently able to beat them and LEGO games because they're fun as hell ( I think they should count as their own genre...can't peg them for any other genre personally ). Not really a fan of sports, most casual games or survival horror ( though I do enjoy watching playthroughs of horror games...and Eternal Darkness is in my top 10 favorite games ever )

My favorite video game genres are platformers, fighting games, party games, point and click games, and puzzle games, as well as the occasional ball-and-paddle and pinball games.

My favorite genre is classic turn-based RPG. However, a close second would be "god games", where there is no assigned narrative or plot whatsoever since you determine virtually everything in the game.

For setting I do think Sci-Fi is the best, but frankly, you can make arguments that just about any video game is a Sci-Fi setting, because keep in mind Sci-Fi does not mean future, you can have Sci-Fi in the present or even in a Middle Ages setting. Tons of games have Sci-Fi elements.

For genre it is first person games though not necessarily shooters, I love playing western RPGs in first person or adventure or stealth games.

My three most played things are probably first person games, RPGs and then MMOs. I like RTS but I tend to get super absorbed in the idea of uniformity and city building and so I forget I am actually supposed to be warring with the AI or other players and using meta game tactics and stuff.

For genre I guess my favorite would be action adventure games. I don't really like first person shooters where all you do is run around and shoot things, I'm more into games with an actual story where you use a variety of methods to take out your enemies (like shooting, slicing, punching and kicking, or simply beating them to death with a blunt object) and maybe solve some puzzles and collect things too.

My favorite kinds of settings are ones involving horror (like the Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and Siren games), ones where you play as Indiana Jones-type characters traveling the world and exploring ancient ruins (like Tomb Raider and Uncharted), or ones where you're exploring a town and get to use shops, play mini games, and complete side quests (like Bully, Sleeping Dogs, and the Yakuza and True Crime games).

I've also started liking the Batman Arkham Asylum games which fall into the Action Adventure category. I've never really been a hardcore Batman fanboy (never read the comics and only watched the animated series as a kid as well as the four Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher movies of the 90's), but these games have kind of rekindled my interest in the Batman universe.

Definitely fantasy RPGs with a rich and sophisticated lore behind them.

My favorite video game genre is sandbox because I want to complete a game to my liking such as completing activities for bonuses, finding collectibles, finding easter eggs, and completing secret missions.

:L it's really a tough one to decide really :L

If we go off of Nostalgic Favorites, i'd have to say my favorite Genre is JRPGs (i think... Legend of Heores is a JRPG right?)
If you look at my more frequently played games, you'd see enjoy games like League of Legends which is a MOBA but i don't really class it as my favorite genre (seriously... i played a game the other day with the most horrendously toxic players who's names fit perfectly in the sense they had names like "Venom" and "Poison"... if you could get anymore toxic with those names, you'd kill the universe)
But, even though i don't play them as much anymore, i'd have to say "Parkor games" are my favorite. Games like Assassins Creed, Mirrors Edge, Warframe (seriously, SPACE NINJAS!) but that's not really a genre :/

Oh, I also love the Next gen MMOs that bring customization to a whole new level. Games like APB Reloaded (an old MMO but i'd still say it's next gen due to the customization it allows... Community still sucks though...) and Dragons Prophet isn't bad either (still gotta play it a bit more though :L)

Games I suggest people look out for soon:

1. Black Desert (Seriously. the hype meter for this game is off the charts. It's a Next gen MMORPG that is in development and is currently setting the standards for Next Gen MMOs. No info on if it's Subscription based or not yet though :/ hope not but by the quality of it, I wouldn't be surprised)
2. Blade and Soul (Not really next gen but still pretty nice in terms of art style and theme. Worth a look into. still in development.)
3. Dying Light (Parkor, Zombies, Survival, Day & Night Cycle, Serious threat levels at night, did i mention PARKOR?!?! Seriously though, it's like Left 4 Dead but seriously stepped up in standards. It's open world and claims to be Single player, Multi player and Co-op. It's developed by warnerbros studios though so i'm not 100% about it yet :/ not really sure if it is just another game that's jumping on the zombie band wagon)

Long story short though, i like almost every game genre but i'm no a huge fan of Psychological horrors... that stuff gives me daymares (nightmares are already full, some are relocating to daytime frights...)

RPG/adventure I love making my character unique/my own and hunting for cool items is my favorite thing in video games plus story settings is pretty huge for me...i like pirate/sci-fi/apocalypse/futuristic/50's and 60's/20's-40's/Desert/Empty city/Mountains/tundra/ruling over a country or city....

I also love racing games...but they have to be good ones....too many bad ones out there.

I usually tend to lean towards RPG's when I play. Mostly Western-styled RPG's, though...there aren't very many JRPG's that I really like. There's something about people calling out their attacks and the blind optimism JRPG heroes tend to have ("No matter how utterly hopeless the odds, I WILL NEVER GIVE UP!! !! !! !!) that irks me.

I also like to play first and third-person shooters, the odd platformer, and action-adventure games. But regardless of the type of game, I'm a sucker for relationship building. That's a large part of the reason I'm such a big fan of Bioware's games and the Persona series.

I like standard side-scrollers and puzzle games, like "Super Mario", "Zelda", and "Tetris". I also like some fighting games, but my rabid fandom about them has faded considerably.
