I played up to the tail end of Gen IV with Heart Gold, and decided that I was going to quit after #500 was announced, as Pokemon had gone beyond breaking my collectors spirit, and no pun intended, failed to evolve beyond its core. I'd be hoping that even with loads of cash out of every orifice that Satoshi Tajiri might realize that this is a bit beyond normal obsession, and instead choose to focus on something other than the mons.

I saw a pretty good video a while ago that gave a really good look at how Pokémon became so successful.

I advise you all to give it a watch as it gave me a bit of an appreciation for how they got the franchise going.

I still play Pokemon games. The other elements of the franchise, especially the television series, I seem to have outgrown.

Partially due to the fact that I have a very good long term memory as a splinter skill, I can recite all 649 in order without having intentionally memorized them.

The last main-series games I played were at the head of Gen V. I intend to play X and/or Y when they come out.

Since this is a Pokemon thread, I have to ask people: what is your opinion on the Fairy type that was recently revealed?

I love relicanth, its by far one of the best from gen 3. I have breed one with head smash in soul silver.

I have meet a few people in there 20's that still play it and with good reason. Sure pokemon might seem childish and I quickly gave up the anime due to that, but the games are quality, with lots of customization and replay value, not to mention and large fanbase for competitive battling.

So if you can remove that from you mindset, you're left with some pretty darn good games.

You have to continually transfer from game system to game system. If you have gameboy advance, you'll be able to do it more easily. I am not sure how many, if any, of the first generation Pokemon are in the latter games. We actually bought two gameboy sp's with yellow, blue, and red for that reason.

But I thought you couldn't transfer Gen I and II Pokémon to any later games?

^ You could ply the remakes instead?

I'm not positive about it. I'd have to try it myself. I'll look online too.

Have yet to catch all the Unova Pokemon, but I'll always get the newest games :)

...though I still haven't picked up White 2. I do have Pokemon X & the X/Y guide pre-ordered :)

Really should fire up Pokemon White & finish the Unova Pokedex....I want my Master status back!

I love Pokemon. I have Blue, Silver, Crystal, Emerald, LeafGreen, Heart Gold, Diamond, Platinum, Pearl, Black and Black 2. I also have a Mystery Dungeon game and Battle Revolution. I've used Action Replay on a few of them, but I stopped. Pokemon Crystal is probably my favorite in the series.

I have a fondness for Crystal too. It was the first game with moving sprites, the story felt more interesting with Suicune's involvements, there was good colour for the time. The game had a lot of my favourite features like radio programs, phone calls, Ruins of Alph (with creepy broadcast and puzzle), headbuttable trees. You could get a Phanpy that could do Watergun and a Dratini that knows ExtremeSpeed.

And I definitely used Kris in Crystal, I have used guys in all other games. I wonder why she has not appeared in any other games.

:-) I played Pokemon Red, back when Pokemon was a new thing.
There's no way I managed to 'Catch 'em All', though.

I have Pokemon Silver and have been meaning to play it for ages ( I got it second-hand, along with my Gameboy Advance SP) ... but I just noticed that it's been remade for the Nintendo DS.

Would it be a better idea to get the newer version, and play Pokemon HeartGold ; instead of Pokemon Silver ?

I'd go with the original silver, but then again I don't like the bevy of new features they've introduced since gen III.

My main issue is that the introduction of all these new things has altered the gameplay and atmosphere surrounding the franchise in a way I don't like and there have been no countermeasures.

With the introduction of special and physical attacks and corresponding EVs, some starter Pokemon simply develop better than others long-term (and stay that way) when they should be equal except in terms of how well they match up against the type themes of early gym leaders. It used to be that you'd pick Bulbasaur for the easiest time and Charmander for the hardest, knowing you'd be facing Rock, Water, and Electric gyms while your collection was still small.

Now your Pokemon that are more geared towards special attack and speed will have to be raised on, say, attack and hit point IVs, which may be all that's available early on. Unless, of course, you want to save them for later or cheat a little, defeating the whole point.
