Depends on the game. I figure it's only important if the developers put emphasis on it (for example, RPG's or games based on other media), and even then, that won't be enough to make or break a game for me.

A lot. I love a good storyline, and in some cases I give it greater importance than I give to gameplay.

Also damn it, I hated Officer Tenpenny, and liked a lot the friendship with Cesar Vialpando. And I loved my Parangon Shepard speeches too. I am currently playing FF Tactices because I was told it had a intriguing storyline, even though it is otherwise outdated by all standards. Shame I don't have much time for it now.

What's most important in a game depends on the type of game. For RPGs the story is more important than anything else followed by controls(can't play a game with the controls are confusing). High quality graphics help but are not necessary. For sports games Controls and graphics rank highly. When people are racing for example they want their car to look good but they also want to be able to control their car properly.

For me I values RPGs and Strategies above all other game types. Your answer, story is very important to me and makes me feels connected with the characters as if I myself am a part of it. There are sometimes other elements that draw me into RPGs such as Pommy from Bomberman The Second Attack I enjoyed having a companion along with my adventure.

My favourite game of all time is Planescape: Torment, and that's because of its deeply philosophical storyline (the RPG game mechanics are actually of minor importance in the game, as you can talk your way out of many situations in the game).

Sounds interesting. I got myself a very future copy of Torment: Tides of Numenera, I loved their vision and it looks like it will be a great game when it's out. That one seems to be all about storyline

/\ I didn't even know about Tides of Numenera. However, its tag line: "What does one Life Matter?" is definitely influenced by the tag line "What can change the nature of a Man?" from Planescape: Torment.

But its not out until 2015   . Evil world is evil.

Yes, I do place an importance on story - however, you can have an amazing story, but if the gameplay is literally painful to do then no amount of story is going to save it.

I generally play MegaTen franchise games.

This, also Persona rules
