are games getting shorter as a trade off for graphics?
I think it's a bit different for every developer. For some like Halo(unfortunately) or CoD it seems more of a focus on multiplayer. Others like Fallout 3 I don't mind so much as it's much more about exploring their large and open worlds yourself. I felt GTAV was a bit shorter than it could have been, but that may just have been due to having three different characters instead of one - even so, I feel like the single player was gipped in general in favor of the **** multiplayer. What I find most disappointing have been Suda51's games seemingly only getting shorter and shorter. I don't mind that much as they seem to tell the story exactly how it was meant to be, but I wish there were still some being made as long and detailed and intricate as Killer7 or Flower, Sun, and Rain. I also can't help but feel it's been due to lower budgets.
There are still some long games, though. Zelda: Skyward Sword had a lot of stuff, even if some of it could be considered padding. I didn't mind it myself, as I felt the areas were varied enough and interesting to go through near about every time what with new items and changes made to each. Lost Odyssey has been taking me quite a while, though I do admit I kind of get burned out for a while to play other games.

This goes for movies as well. It doesn't change the fact that movies with sound are more fun than silent movies, though.
Aye, this. This is one of my absolute biggest complaints.
In the time it takes for some emo-tastic character in some RPG to veeeeerrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyy sllllllooooowwwwwlllllyyyyyyy ramble about whatever the next task is, I could have simply read the same exact words in text form 25 times over. Exactly why I can go back and play games like Final Fantasy 4 with no problem, but newer RPGs make me wanna punt the console down the stairs.

The comparison is not matching. When playing an RPG or whatever you actually have sound for music and sound effects, as well as that the dialogue context is given to you in either written or spoken form. In written form its simply not that hell annoying. So instead of comparing it with movies with sound and old silent movies, you should rather compare it with films and books. Both give you the same context and information, but in different ways. I prefer definitely books. ^^

A good book is one that invites you to use your imagination (eg. Dune) rather than flat out giving you every description, coupled with a Mary Sue in first person.
Old silent movies had both sound effects and music played at the cinema--they just did not have synchronized sound, and thus, they could not have talking actors.
But they have voice acting. In my head. The annoying thing is, that when the actor is done with telling me the quest, I am forced to stare for an eternity on my display, to wait until that gnagnagna-noise, is as well done with telling me stuff, that the voice actor in my head already told me in an not annoying form. ^^ Forcing me to get aggressions against NPC´s and avoiding by all means to talk more then necessary to them, to not be tortured by their endless gnagna-noises, because of them torturing me with that additional verbal voice actor, doing his job far worse then the voice actor in my head, is actually not something that benefits me. ^^ Sorry, but just like in conversations, listening to that stuff, simply endures and tires me, so I always activate subtitles. I am interested in getting information and data when talking to an NPC, and just like when reading a book, the voice comes from itselfs. But simply not that horrible endlessly boring and tiresome. ^^ Being forced to listen concentrated to 25 seconds of noise, only to get a little piece of worthy information, to be again forced to listen concentrated on 1 minute of noise to get another necessary piece of information, makes me wanna punch my head against the keyboard. ^^
