I want Civ III again, it had the best selection of units and no religion.

Galactic civilizations is ok but I hate the other species and the ship-making process is complicated. I'd prefer being able to research more than tech at once. There is a huge amount of technologies to research in it.

Very detailed though, I love TBS games.

I prefer RTS to most, however.

i love civ3. i used to create gigantic maps

on civ4 i can barely play the "standard sized" piece of crap map, and i hate the winnie-the-pooh mickey-mouse ish graphics. WHY. WHY did they have to make the graphics all rubbery and bouncy wtf, if you zoom in theyve made the trees wave, ffs why didnt they just make the trees bounce up and down to the rythm while theyre at it?
add little mickey mouses dancing around

i hate it...

Many have mentioned Civilization IV. While it's a good game on it's own, I've found modifications like Rhye's and Fall of Civilization and Fall from Heaven to be actually better. One of the things about the game is that it's so moddable. (Civ3ers who hate Civ4 only do so because the strategies they used in CivIII don't work in IV. 8))

Hearts of Iron II (the sequel, Hearts of Iron III, is about to be released) is basically a TBS masquerading as an RTS. Very good game.

Of course, the most obvious of them all: POKÉMON! :D

I love Fire Emblem games. I just got into them again after a year or so break and I love them even more than before.
They are a perfect mix of strategy, battle, and storyline. (:

Currently, I'm replaying Sacred Stones(GBA) and following Ephraim. I'm on the penultimate battle.
Some of my favorites on my team are my four Paladins (including Amelia with accelerated stat growth), none of which I trained in the tower. Plus 2 sages (Artur, Ewan) and a summoner. And, of course, my lovely, lovely Wyvern Knight. He's practically a general with wings. (:

Besides that Fire Emblem rediscovery, I'm also a few chapters into my first play through of FE: Path of Radiance (GameCube). Pretty good so far.

Also, would Final Fantasy Advance count as TBS? The one with Marche, Montblanc etc? I loved that game. :D

And, if Pokemon counts... What about Golden Sun? I've only played the two for GBA. Great games.

I used to really enjoy Alpha Centauri. Doesn't seem like anyone plays it any more...
Of course, neither do I because it won't run on XP. :(

Spellcross is an oldie that I enjoyed.

I also used to play the Steel Panther series, and Talonsoft games such as East Front 2.

Is M.A.X. 1 and 2, TBS?

It runs on mine! Or rather, it ran on mine, when I was using XP, and it runs on my Vista box now; but I don't think I had to do anything to it to make it work, might have ticked compatibility mode or something. But it certainly can be made to work. 's a great game. I loved the different terraforming options and trying to work out different patterns of improvements, and using crawlers to ferry ridiculous amounts of resources into cities... also interesting having read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series, to dig moholes and all that.

(and last I looked at the prices for Alien Crossfire, it was going for a hundred quid on Amazon - says something about it!) ^^

I'm lucky to have both Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire. I hoped to find a copy for Linux - closest I got was a store that sold Windows copies with a Linux installer. They were all out of the game, and wouldn't sell me the installer at any price otherwise.
I must experiment with getting it to run when I build my new box...

Recently I've been playing a lot of Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3. I am really enamored with this game, after hesitating for a while given it being a Japanese SRPG, which generally are grind fests with little strategy (save for Fire Emblem). I wish I had not hesitated, as it is a brilliant game that reminds me a lot of Jagged Alliance 2, only in 3D and with a beautiful pencil art style, and a colourful cast of characters. Sirtech never made a Jagged Alliance 3 so this game fulfills that role for me just fine.

The best TBS Ive found to date is still Missionforce: Cyberstorm. Granted, you cant play it on any of the modern PC due to its age (came out around '95). Its even better if you're a Mech fan. Customize and mobilize. There is also the Front Mission series for Playstation that seems to stand out faily well too . . . but im biased toward the Mech stuff anyway.
