They are getting shorter and I think it kinda well blah. If the game is short I am going to rent it or buy it used, because it can be a great game but its not worth the new game price.

i really dont understand why the game makers would make a game like oblivion endless, it just defeats the point, because the side-quests in my opinion are pointless except say the guild quests where you get some nice gear at the end but if you have alreay completed the game what would be the point in doing that?

I liked Oblivion haveing no ending there was a lot to do, doesnt defeat the purpose, I personaly tried not to complete the main quest as I didnt want it to end quickly.

Mass Effect was a good RPG/FPS hybrid that had the good elements of both. You had FPS-style gameplay (better than Halo and on par with Half-life as far as I'm concerned), combined with an RPG-length campaign...

Bioware needs to make more games... they're one of the few good developers left (although I still hate the fact that they release 6 months earlier on 360 than on PC...)

For a long time now, FPS makers have given up trying to make sizable single player experiences, when the majority of players are looking for multiplayer. A lot of devs also expect the majority of the game's content to come from modders. I remember reading a lot of scathing reviews back when this trend started, but I guess people have just grown used to it by now.

I don't think that's a new trend, FPSs have been getting shorter since around 2000 or so, when online multiplayer became really big.

The demo version of DOOM alone had 9 levels. The Wolfenstein 3D demo had 10 and no less than 60 in the full game.
Also many early FPSs had a few secret levels. That's something no developer would ever think of doing nowadays, adding levels that few players will ever play.

Crap, I knew it... I'm in a minority of people who enjoy long campaigns of exploring and monster-shooting, LOL. I blame Q3A and UT for the trend in games which skimp on single-player.

Poor me. Is there no room for someone who wants to do single player?

I think they have gotten shorter, though really it depends on how good you are. If your as bad as me complete MGS4 on very easy takes decades to do :D

Divide campaigns into 6-10 missions, and have submissions to fall back or advance to if you are losing or winning ahead of the normal schedule, respectively. Some campaigns should be able to flow and interlink, or even change from one to another depending of player skill.
That is how I see a good campaigning.

i really never got why gamemakers added secret levels it's just extra work for them when they could be using that time to improve their existing levels

Hidden things are cool, I am sure there are many of us that enjoy treasure hunting for extra content in games. One game I thought had an interesting take on exploreing and getting cheats and stuff was explored by "Enter the Matrix", though apparebtly the game got bad reviews I thought the whole finding comands for programs and passwords was intersting thing.
