Violence and Kids?

IMO, parents have WAY more of an effect on kids then games or other media. I DO however think that there are some games that are just too disturbing for little ones. GTA comes to mind. Games where people (not monsters) are getting ripped apart or other crazy, over the top violence seems a bit much to me for a kid (or anyone really). Not becuase I think it makes them violent, but that I think it's a bit upsetting in general. So, I will probably let my son play most games we have, since I personally just dislike extreme, needless violence and tend to have games that have a moderate to little amount, or have "necessary" violence. For example, Cartoony or unrealistic violence, like in a fantasy game like Neverwinter Nights, is fine IMO. Violence against "bad guys" in a heroic sort of situation is fine. Fallout 1 and 2 I might let him play before 3 since the violence in 3 is so in your face and more "real" seeming. I'd still let him play 3 eventually, but maybe when he's older, like a pre-teen or something.

Really, it's just up to you and your opinions on the matter. I really think these video game "Nazis" are crazy. Just like adults, there are stupid kids and intelligent kids. And most kids are way smarter than you think. They know when things aren't real. If you watch your kids and talk to them about stuff they aren't going to play Doom and then go shoot up someplace. They're going to do that because they have issues WAY more complicated than some game they played or some song they heard. JM2C

Only if you're a Sociopath. Which, in that case if you are a Homocidal Sociopath you're going to kill someone regardless of what you play or watch.

Isnt a homicidal sociopath another word for psychopath?

Not sure. I'm no doctor or anything. I've always thought they basically desribe the same thing (psychopath and sociopath). Not all psychopaths or sociopaths are murders. Some are just manipulative or abusive in other ways. It's a scale. According to the Wiki page (I know, that's not necessarily the BEST source, but it's what I could get to quick) a dr. named David T. Lykkan states that a psychopath is born that way while a sociopath is mostly "nurtured" to be that way due to trauma or abuse (so if you watch the TV show Dexter, he would apparently fall into the "Sociopath" catagory. A he is definitely a murderer ). "Both personality disorders are the result of an interaction between genetic predispositions and environmental factors, but psychopathy leans towards the hereditary whereas sociopathy tends towards the environmental." From what is described it seems that both are types of Antisocial Personality Disorder. Doing another quick sweep on Google I see some sites describe Sociopath as the description of someone with ASPD, and that is actually isn't a separate thing anymore.

Anyway, my point was that only someone incapable of feelings and who has violent tendencies would murder without feeling or necessity (crimes of passion, self defense for ex). Those people usually feel SOMETHING. Only one incapable of empathy kills with no feelings towards it. Only sociopaths/psychopaths fall into that catagory. And then, only ones who are violent (like I said, not all are. Some just screw with people's minds). So I find it hard to believe seeing a muder portrayed on TV would affect me the same way chemically as comitting one myself IRL. But like I said, I'm no dr.

And I did this on good graphiced games.... from teh age of around 10.... And I was a total pacafist. I have never ahd a fight.... (I'd probably loose unless I was determined to do some damage)
and I am not a violent person... yet freinds who are not allowed very violent games... well they are always more violetn than me!
