I will never forget the first time I played the SNES version of Final Fantasy two. Blew my mind.

Stellar 7 (Apple II) - because it was the first game I had that had 3D graphics (though wireframe, but that was great back then) and it was darned hard

Elite (Apple II) - took the 3d (wireframe) graphics into space and basically had an unlimited (though somewhat repetitive) universe to explore

Half Life - because it took the 3d shooter to a different level of game play where the story was intricate and important, and the enemies used some decent tacticts against you

Half-Life 2 - more of the same, but on a much grander scale

Dune II - because the first real RTS and pretty immersive

Starcraft - took what Dune II had started and took it to a whole new level - great storytelling and online play

Falcon 4.0 - achieved what flight simulators (including its predecessors in the Falcon family) to that point had been missing - very thorough technical simulator of (most) of the details of flying a plane. And had a truely dynamic campaign.

Team Fortress 2 and Team Fortress Classic - because of different character classes and the need to compose teams and play the game in a way that the players must compliment each other.
War Thunder - brought mass-scale, online flight simulation and combat to the masses in a way that makes it accessible for everyone.

Excellent list.

I would add the Marathon series to it, also Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas.

And on consoles, Halo and Borderlands

I loved the silent hill games, I played the demo called PT which I believe is related to it somehow maybe? BF4 and 3 are my all time favorites though.

Oh man, that's so hard. I can't pick just one game, I find a lot of them to be good for different reasons. My favorite series to play are Metroid, Pokemon, Legend of Zelda and Dragon Quest, so I'm just going to pick the best ones I've played out of each.

For Metroid: Metroid Prime
Pokemon: damn, this is a hard one... either Pokemon X, Coliseum, or OmegaRuby.
Legend of Zelda: Definitely Majora's Mask.
Dragon Quest: DQXI: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. (Although admittedly I've only played three DQ games, but I love them so much more than Final Fantasy)

Honestly I think Dragon Quest deserves more love as a whole over here in the west. The games have great stories, and Toriyama-sensei's designs are great to look at. I actually do enjoy the games that he's done character and monster designs for, at least the ones I've actually played.
