you have that game O_O wow i never even seen it anywhere. i never played it but i agree that boss looks insanely difficult, i don't even need to play the game to know that i never want to try to fight larsa.

i am amazed at how 80% of the time you can hardly see the boss or your ship.

my hardest bosses are nothing compared to that.

that's cool that you can make it that far though.

It's only available in Japan, as with nearly all of Cave's games; only the first Deathsmiles can be found at retail here, and Guwange and Deathsmiles 2 can be found on XBLA. Futari, at least, is region free though. I have a JP 360 though, is how I have these games.

Fortunately with Futari, there's so many modes to choose from; Ultra mode, insane as it is, actually isnt particularly enjoyable; it's frustrating, and since it's nigh-impossible to even SURVIVE half the time, trying to score points is futile. And for many shmup fans such as myself, scoring is half the fun. So the other modes, of which there are many, are more enjoyable.

Such a brilliant game though, either way.

i found one for the ps2 on play asia, i don't have a 360 or ever want to get one. i've seen videos of people playing on ultra, that looks impossible to me. heck when i found i wanna be the guy i that that was insanely hard, and i wasn't playing it.

Originally, I would have said the same thing, about not wanting the 360.... but me being such a fan of the shmup genre, I *had* to get one, since that's where 90% of them end up (not counting PC doujin shmups). The PS3, unfortunately, gets so very, very few; and I dont even count the Wii.

of course, this is why I ONLY have a JP 360 unit; the retail selection for the thing here in the states just bores me. The XBLA selection is worth it though.

The PS2 games by Cave arent bad, but they're not nearly the quality of the 360 titles.... of course, that's mostly the fault of the PS2 being awful (seriously, I hate the thing. You'd hate it too if you'd been through TEN of them. No, really.).

The original Mushihime-sama is the best of that bunch. Easily. Brilliant game, though the scoring system makes no sense.

Demon Wall from Final Fantasy IV.
80% of the bosses from Legend of Legaia. The Delilas, Songi, Koru, Cort, Gaza and, most of all, Xain.

you've been through ten ps2s, i still have my first one that i bought years ago. it's even been roughed up a bit it has a custom lid that i broke part of the body to get on there, and it has packaging tape rolled on the back of it, but it still runs, though when playing a game you can't rock it to much or you lose the picture on the tv.

but if mine is still going then you must have had some really bad luck. mine is a slim, my bro had a big one, it still is going and he got it practically on launch day.

i like the ps2 but i can understand why you don't, like how i feel about dragon age sorta a love\hate thing.

the reason i am iffy about the 360 is because of the failure rate that thing has, i'm not willing to put money down on something like that.

even the ps3 games aren't much, i didn't get one till it droped in price and a few games worth buying came out.

pc ones? like touhou, i tried that i couldn't pass the first stage in cherry blossom on easy, i had a hard time watching the moving ship and watching the enemies at the same time.

The 360s arent as bad as they sound.... the failure rate on them is.... well, exaggerated. I've dealt with many of them. My first one was back when it came out, and I later sold it due to lack of selection, my 2nd was taken by my brother when he moved out, my third was a US unit and was sold when I realized that I only ever used my 4th, the JP unit.

Not one of those 4 has ever screwed up, and I had each for a long length of time. The JP one currently gets a good deal of use. I just follow specific rules to keep each one working without issues; hasnt failed me yet.

Whereas the PS2..... yeah. TEN of them. No joke. I had one die once because it fell 1.5 feet onto a hard floor. I was very surprised by this at the time. They're shoddy though. They're BUILT shoddy. Back then, Sony kept changing the parts they were made of to keep costs down, and it hurt. I remember when the slimline first came out, I was working at EB Games, and we had ALOT of people return the things because they'd overheat after a couple hours.... they didnt have FANS inside! I understand that the overheating problem isnt there now, but it was indeed in some of the first models of the slimline. No console should have that problem right out of the box, and so commonly!

In reality though, I just buy whatever console/thing has the games I want, regardless of if it's annoying or not.

As for the shmups.... yeah. They're hard to learn. You cant expect to jump into something like that without getting wrecked a number of times at first. Even something like Touhou, which is on the lower end of difficulty for that genre, is going to be quite hard to new players even on easy mode. That's how the genre is. When I first started I was like you; it was hard to follow everything going on at once! So many bullets, so many enemies! I started with an easy one, Giga Wing, and it wrecked me many times back then. Nowadays, it's TOO easy; I can do it all the way through without dying once, including the special endboss.

It just takes getting used to, and lots of practice and determination. But it's a worthwile genre, if you end up liking it.

Now, back on topic, here's another boss I'd wanted to point out:

The Matador, from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

The video shows him being defeated, but this guy is a terror, particularly if you're playing the game on Hard. He represents a MAJOR difficulty spike in an already very hard game. Chances are, the first time you fight him, he's going to absolutely obliterate you. You have to do alot of work to have a chance at beating him.... and then the game gets harder from there. There are tougher bosses in the game of course, but the Matador is the one most players remember because he's the first one to just WIPE THE FLOOR with you when you meet him.

Also, he's just cool, his entrance is just cool, and that music is absolutely epic. It's an amazing fight, even if he erases you.

That's easy.

That'd be Larsa, from Mushihime-sama Futari.

This:

Believe me, it's much, much, ***MUCH*** harder than it even looks. And it looks like a nightmare. Probably less than 10 people have ever defeated her; I'm not one of them, lol. But I can at least get halfway through that fight, with luck.

I love super-difficult games, but nothing else even remotely comes close to comparing to Larsa.
Larsa was exactly who I was going to choose. Her regular form isn't too hard; however, if you are playimg the "Black Label" version on God difficulty and get to Larsa on a 1CC, she'll turn into her true form. This is the only final boss I have never defeated in my over 20 years of gaming. No other final boss even comes close to being as difficult as True Larsa.

Actually, the God Mode version of Larsa isnt as hard as the Ultra one; the God Mode one is actually within my own ability to defeat. "Spiritual Larsa" is the name of the form you're thinking of. You have to not just get there, but get there without dying, is the part that's a pain in the butt.

This is, I believe, the form you are thinking of:

Yeah.... she sorta gets crushed in this one. She's mean, but I think her previous form is actually a little more annoying than this one. This one mainly seems just like a bonus, to those that get there and actually fulfill the conditions to make her appear.

Still, that version of her is beaten without even bombing, but the Ultra version.... never been done. Even the best of the best of the best die a few times while fighting Ultra mode Larsa.

......or they just die over and over and over again on Ultra mode's first stage, because it's annoying and terrible and annoying. Always hated that. Kinda like the 4th stage of Ultra in the first game, I always hated THAT one too. Stage 5 was more fun.

Yeah, Spiritual Larsa is the name of the boss I always lose my credit fighting. Mainly I stick to playing God difficulty on Black Label instead of Ver. 1.5's Ultra (I think the Black Label DLC is a more polished and fair version than 1.5 and infinitely better than the original Ver. 1.0 DLC). Speaking of Shmups, you know what's hard? Trying to 1CC Ikaruga on Hard without ever shooting the main lasers (so the only way to attack is to keep switching polarity until you've eaten enough bullets to unleash your missiles). Playing the game that way, I haven't even gotten to Tajiri without losing a credit.

I agree, BL for Futari is a good deal better than 1.5. Ultra is just.... annoying, most of the time. That first stage for example; I hate it so much. Ultra in the FIRST game was absurdly difficult, but it never IRRITATED me like Futari Ultra does.

As for Ikaruga, I'm one of the rare shmup fans that just really doesnt care for it. I play these for score, always, and Ikaruga's scoring system just.... bothers me.

Actually, for whatever reason, basically EVERY shmup by Treasure just bothers me. Though I tend to like their non-shmup games.

Gunstar Heroes is one of the best Run 'N Gun shooters ever. That, Contra 3, and Alien Soldier (just gotta love how Alien Soldier is boss after boss!).

I can't think of a particular boss; but this thread did remind me of a difficult dungeon, Water Temple from Ocarina of Time. Anyone regretfully remembers that too?

Brachioraidos from FFIV, the first few times I tried him.

I don't tend to play really hard games (I have yet to find one that's fun), but in a game where I don't usually lose to bosses, Brachioraidos just murdered me the first few times I did him - and as I recall I went after him with level 71-75 characters. Once I hit level 99 with all the characters I went after him with it was no longer impossible, or even really really hard... But it sure wasn't easy either. Sometimes it was impossible since he occasionally just spams Globe 199 and kills your entire party faster than you can revive them.
