Really want to give this a try but can't justify £39 at the moment.. when I haven't played Oblivion properly! Would people recommend I played that first before Skyrim?

Those giants are crazy...

I went up to one thinking they could maybe be reasoned with... Discover they are not friendly...

Giant runs up to me.... i look up at him and lift my little wooden shield thinking maybe it will absorb some of the impending doom...

My character exploded into the air doing millions of cartwheels... i laughed histerically the first time this happened...

Okay, I've played for a while and...I'm addicted now. Playing a Nord with a one handed axe that blasts people in the face with fire. ^.^

I started playing with my usual style - sneaky Argonian thief with potions - got to about level fifteen or so and then realised the game would be more fun if I a) didn't stop every ten seconds to pick rotting mushrooms/pluck hapless butterflies out of the sky/empty every sack of food/defoliate the whole province and b) I tried something difficult, like Conjuration. So I'm now trying a Breton Conjurer. The necromancy animation is cool... :)

The UI is (mostly) awful, that's my major gripe. Plot... so-so, so far. Graphics are good, level design is good, most of the mechanics changes are improvements on Oblivion.

It works :) Did some small changes and tadaa :) I started playing today as a Kahjiit female. Pretty cat. And it's awesome. I shoot a mammoth by accident.. I was aiming for the giant. Not a very good choise I realised when both came for me. The thrill and fear of running from those two was so unexpectedly funny I felt like laughing and yet screaming. They died later though. *proud* :D What races do you play?

Should I buy this game when the price goes down or should I rent it and why?

Ah that was the theme I went for with my first character too.

Now I think i'm gonna be a Lizard or a cat for a change of strategy

I used this combo in Oblivion too. What can I say? It's a combo that works for me. Just switched to a one handed sword. I missed being able to gut people, I guess. XD

because like Oblivion, the melee combat in Skyrim is still really terrible.

Don't even have mounted horse combat!

The Mount and Blade series has spoiled me 8)

Man, i feel so slow in this game. Did everyone else start playing it last week and gotten this far already? I mean I'm not playing 24/7 - so far I am only up to level 11 or 12 I think, and still in the midst of the main quests (just attended the embassy party). Anyway, I will say the game is addictive, but having not really played any RPG's since the very first ones that used 3D type engines (i.e. Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss, which was released in the early 90's) I am pretty shocked by how little the genre has evolved - yeah, graphics are better but the gameplay really is not.
