Why did Nintendo not release them in the US originally? The first 6 were Japan-only releases

Probably had to do with RPGs and strategy games not really having enough demand in the US at the time. The amount of effort to translate and localize such a dialogue-heavy game wouldn't have been worth it sales-wise. Translating games was also a much more difficult process back then due to technical limitations.

Then Smash Brothers Melee came out and everyone wanted to play the game with Roy and Marth.

Yeah, the first one that came out in the US was in 2003 on the GBA, not sure if it was planned for a US release before or after SSBM came out at the end of 2001. Its not the only franchise to be revived by inclusion in a Smash Bros. title. After Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out and included Pit we got a new Kid Icarus from the same lead designer. Nintendo should continue including obscure characters in Smash Bros and make new games for them so people will stop accusing them of only having Mario and Zelda. Stuff like Star Tropics, Punch-Out, Golden Sun, Custom Robo, Sin and Punishment, Animal Crossing, and Advance Wars are all Nintendo franchises that have had more than a single game and yet haven't had a playable character in Smash Bros.

Then again, that didn't work for Earthbound.

I would love a new Star Tropics game. One of the best and most underrated games for the NES.

Mother 3 not getting a US release (and Earthbound never getting a rerelease) allegedly had more to do with copyright issues, especially in regards to the music. However, I'm currently playing through the Mother 3 fan translation and finding a lot of stuff that wouldn't have been received well by american audiences, such as anti-capitalist themes and androgynous characters.

Yeah, Mother 3 did have a lot of "questionable content" in it, but I'm pretty surprised at what Nintendo lets slide these days.

I'm the same to this day (over 30 years now !) I don't under stand what all the fuss is about.I've never liked anything form that company and I can keep an open mind about these things recently I even enjoyed games by uberslop and EA (exterminaters of art work/evil @)

ie Mirrors Edge (EA)

Far Cry 2 (uber)

I honestly think Ninty is rated just right. In the console market, they have pretty much been doing their own thing as far as hardware and accessories go, so they pretty much consciously decided against appealing to those who want top notch hardware, and no gimmicks, opting instead for the cult system route, appealing primarily to nostalgics. They seem to be dangerously close to traveling down the same road as MS(who I think is the most overrated of the big 3), who pump out rehashes of the same games over and over again to appeal to their core fanbase, while pushing their gimmicks, despite regular controls working just fine. At this point, I think Zelda, and even Mario still have a reasonable amount of effort put into them, and Ninty does have a few other ips up their sleeve, even though they often don't spend as much time advertising or pushing those other ips, at least in the console market. I really hope Ninty doesn't turn into MS, because I still have a personal fondness for them, despite their choices regarding their consoles.

As far as the handheld market goes though, Ninty has, and always will be the king IMHO. The dual screen design, and the addition of a touch screen has actually managed to enhance my experience with the ds and 3ds, and Ninty's handhelds have always had way more going for them than just Mario and Zelda. I'm fond of the vita too, but the 3ds definitely has the edge in terms of exclusives. The 3ds isn't what I would call an underrated device, since it has done reasonably well. I think Ninty has just made better choices with their handhelds than with their consoles, and it has shown in terms of popularity. Any disdain or disregard Ninty has earned regarding the wii u, I think they brought it on themselves. They may not have been entirely wrong, mind you. They have in fact, managed to draw in plenty of longtime Ninty fans like moths to a flame, but that form of hypnosis clearly only works on their biggest fans.

Despite Sony and Microsoft overshadowing Nintendo, they're rated just right and have made some innovative video games with their own unique gameplay mechanics and unique art style to differentiate themselves. I think they're making some form of a comeback with their new AAA titles such as Super Smash. Bros for Wii U/3DS, Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2, and Pikmin 3.

Except they never have. I've been playing Nintendo my entire life, and every single game that bore the Mario name was extremely good for what it was, including Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart... They may not have been your cup of tea, and I didn't like many of them, but whatever they were trying to do with it, they did it well. With the exception of the CD-I mishap (which didn't sell), the same goes for Legend of Zelda.

Just because you personally don't care for a game doesn't mean it's dog crap. Dog crap is Superman 64. Dog crap is Ultima IX. There has never, ever been a "crap" Mario. Even SMBII was fun. Just weird.

Idunno, some might argue that Super Mario Land was pretty crap (though I still enjoy it a bit).

I'm not even going to get into the weird third-party spinoff games (like Mario is Missing, etc)...mostly because I don't remember them very well.

I feel Nintendo is severely overrated. As far as software goes, they pretty much just keep milking their franchises over and over and over. Hardly anything is ever new. Nintendo: "Oh, we got new games releasing. They are remakes of games from 2 generations ago, reboots, and ports from our other systems. Yaaayyyy!"

Yayyyy

Umm

No!

Nintendo should be renamed Redundendo.

The Wii was a massive success and pretty much made Nintendo king of the consoles again--so I wouldn't say that they're underrated per se. The reason why the Wii U has failed, is that it brings nothing new to the table. Gone are the intuitive controllers, and you're left with a tablet that takes away much of the fun. On top of that, it's only a little more powerful than PS3 and Xbox 360, both of which will get their respective successors later this year.

As far as the games go, Zelda: Ocarina of Time is pretty much as good as everyone says it is--and Nintendo does indeed make the best party games, but many other titles are overrated. Nintendo tend to recycle a lot of the stuff over and over again, and milk a lot of the franchises as badly as Activision does.
