Another one I hate is: "iOS / Android / mobile / tablets dont have any REAL games, just that casual crap". Yeah. My collection of 200+ games on those which mostly consists of *very* hardcore games (like, extreme-difficulty danmaku shmups, or brutal roguelikes, or the similar ridiculous-difficulty sorts of games that I like; and these are *not* watered down for these versions of them) would like to dispute that. Of my entire collection, probably only about 20 or so of that 200 is "casual" types.

There's obviously lots of real games on those, but the funky touch-screen controls artificially increase the difficulty on many of them. The Nintendo DS/3DS have normal controls for that reason even though there's also a touch-screen of course.

Just imagine how lame the Nintendo 3DS would be without a normal analog stick and/or d-pad.

Oh I know THAT. But that depends entirely on the developers, and somewhat on the player. Robot Wants Kitty is my favorite example of touchscreen controls done right; alot of levels for that game are *very* hard (and I mean, would be every bit as hard on PC as well). But the devs got the controls right for that one; I have the same precision platforming in that one as I do with any controller. The *only* difference to me is a lack of tactile feedback.... which frankly I never noticed or needed with controllers ANYWAY. Some players of course DO need that, but.... that's not the game's fault, or that of the devs. Anyone can get used to it though.

The shmups are an even better example though; on consoles, I'd prefer an arcade stick, but on the iPad.... well, I actually have *more* precision on there, and no 8-way direction limitations. Those dont get artificially harder unless the developers screw them up REALLY badly. Playing Mushihime-sama on Ultra is pretty much the same overall on there as it is on console; the only difference is I have to manually set the difficulty to max on iOS to get the true arcade version of that mode.

And beyond all that.... honestly, if a game doesnt control well, I dont bother with it. This being because I have zero patience for things that dont work the way I want them to. If a game's controls are even a bit off, I delete it. Not to mention, I really dislike the concept of artificial difficulty ("Fake difficulty" as TVTropes puts it).... bugs the hell outta me. Always has. Cant stand it, so I dont bother with games that do it.

As for the 3DS..... my opinions on that thing are probably best left unsaid, I think.

I currently have a Nintendo 3DS-XL which is a big improvement over the first one since the screens are almost twice as large.

By the way just recently I noticed a couple of the older "Mega Man" games(Mega Man 2, Mega Man X) are available for purchase on the iPhone. I didn't actually try them, but I'd be willing to bet they're much harder than their console counterparts due to the touch-screen d-pad and buttons.

Impression of my my brother:
"Video games? Psssh. That stuff is for kids and inadequate adults. I'd rather be either doing stuff in the real world or getting as drunk as humanly possible. The business side of it sure is interesting though. Those things make tons of money!"

Only if the developers screwed up real bad. It's possible for it to be exactly the same difficulty if the devs dont blow the controls.

.....but as this is Crapcom, well.... yeah. They're almost definitely unplayable. I'm just going to pretend they dont exist.

Though, it should be noted that I say all of this as someone who uses an iPad (4th gen), not an iPhone. iPhones.... much, much too small for this sort of thing. Well, by my opinion anyway. The controls for many of the games I'm into can be bloody perfect.... on the iPad. I dont think I could do it on the tiny iPhone.

Lines like that make me glad I'm not in the "real world", as defined by society.

"Get a life."
Had one. Disabled now. Games give me lots of lives, and the ability to reload a save to prevent permanent damage.
"But, but, but, you're too old to play WoW!"
This one, if they believe me about my age. And I'm old enough to have been playing games when 'girl gamers are really guys' was a given. Sorry, this grandmother does indeed play WoW, among other things.

Video games are for boys only.

I'm always still playing my old consoles. I still have my old DS Lite and original Xbox. People tell me "Dude, nobody plays those anymore. You need to get the next gen!" They say it like I'm either falling behind or I should stop obsessing with games that are old.

I would love to get the next gen, but there's no room in my house.

So I like games going as far back as the mid 80s to mid 00s; at least I'm not like those people who obsess over Pong or whatever.

This is totally like me. I constantly get told i should go with my time and play the current games. I still play a new game every now and then but most of the time i play games that are atleast 10 years old. :P

I can't think of any right now, but I have heard those ones a lot, particularly one and two. What's interesting about those two claims is that no one ever provides any evidence to support them. EVER.

Who is to say that watching sports on TV, a far less mentally stimulating pastime, isn't a waste of time,or that it isn't "for kids"? And more to the point, who is to say that any activity should be restricted to a particular age group?

These aren't all from non-gamers, but...

"I thought only guys liked video games"
"Girls aren't as good at video games as guys"
"E-rated games are stupid and for babies, only M-rated games are good."
"Why would you spend money on something that's not even real?"
"Children are obese because they're playing video games instead of playing outside"
"Video games games will rot your brain"
"Adults who play video games are all unemployed losers with no life and still live with their parents."
"Video games are for kids"

I don't mind other people playing M-rated games as long as they're old enough to, but all the really good games are either E or T-rated IMO. :)

God yes I recognize that. My friend played Limbo on my account for 5 minutes and unlocked 2 bronze trophies. I got pissed.

One time I had two friends over while playing Guitar Hero, and one of them pointed out I do a lot of funny movement with my lips and tongue while playing. Ever since then I became aware, which made me self-conscious, which in turn always took me out of my concentration while playing. Ugh.

My sis said "Why do you need new games? You have so many already" By that logic, why go see a new movie? Just buy 5 on dvd and watch them over and over again.

Biggest hates are ignorant people who state that video games dulling your brains are fact, and refuting to look at the countless of evidence that shows it does nothing but enhance certain brain functions.
And people who claim it turns people violent. I wonder what video games mankind has been playing for the past thousands of years...

Otherwise I don't care. My mom and sis used to complain but they get it now. Most people in my social circle are heavy gamers themselves as well, so I don't really get complained to.
Except for my short bursts of anger when a game doesn't do what I want it to.

I can't recall anyone ever saying anything negative to me regarding video games, except for my mom saying a few times that I was playing too much, but it's never been a big deal and she was probably right. Video games are a comfort to me, my safe place.

When I was living with my parents, my stepfather was often condescending about my interest in videogames, especially Guitar Hero as he considered himself a virtuoso and looked at the game more as a failed attempt at emulating the guitar experience as opposed to... just a game. I know all too well that some things just aren't for everybody and I accepted long ago that videogames just aren't his sort of thing, however I would have appreciated his silence in the matter.

I hate this one: "Kids nowadays are reading less and less because of these games." This is from my grandma, who's always telling me I need to read more "classic" books (one of the things I DEFINITELY refuse to read since they're too old-fashioned). I'd rather play a video game, since I'm not stuck in the past.

One time my mother wanted to give my cousin a PS2 but her parents said "no, we'd rather have her read". That makes no sense to me as playing video games doesn't mean you don't ever read. They let her watch tv which would also take away from that valuable reading time.

Years later they got her a Wii.
