I love me some co-op shooters. Left 4 Dead and its sequel are my favourites.
I don't like the new trend where co-op shooters need to include RPG mechanics such as stat builds and item collecting. I just wanna be able to jump in and start playing and not have to worry about having the right stats and gear. I guess it's good for replay value, being able to use different builds and unlocking new weapons to use keeps things varied.
But figuring out a good build isn't very exciting to me. There's no action to be found in optimizing some numbers.
You see, I feel the opposite. I don't find a game where just beating the boards is all there is very fun. I guess to each their own. But I also tend to dislike games I can finish in 3 or 4 sittings or fewer. I don't play games every day, but when I do it's a 3-6 hour block usually.
To me it's boring to have a co-op where the two players are using essentially the same character with the same abilities.
I mean, to use Borderlands as an example, the character building is fun, but having multiple different characters that focus on more specific playing styles makes the game more appealing to a wider audience. For example, I prefer sniping and stealth in shooters. So I usually choose a character who's traits cater to that. Some people like melee. Some like cover and shoot. Others like going balls out. BL, 2 in particular, gives something for everyone.
