I bought the Orange Box and had no problem completing it :) No crashes or anything. Makes me wonder why they delete the really good levels such as Lost Coast. Who would've thought some game without aliens or s**t to kill would be so much fun. The version I played was in Russian so I had no idea what was going on, I was almost stuck on the first few levels until I worked it out some hours later

It's alright, but without GlaDOS, it just isn't the same.

It's kind of okay, but it's not as fun as the real game...the learning curve is so narrow that after the first 20 levels or so, I was terribly bored and turned it off (and it has a LOT of levels).

But heck, it's free, so might as well just try it and see what you think ;)

I bought the dvd-rom version but don't have internet, so it won't let me play it. a mate says there's a way to install it without needing internet or steam access... anyone knows what he means?

Legitimatelly, no. You need the Internet access which I hate. Then there is the checking of new updates which irritate me, so I disable check for updates. I play the 64bit version and I can tell you now that 32bit and 64bit saved games do not transfer across, but your 32bit and 64bit saves are kept separate.

I downloaded Orange Box hacked version without Steam (I now own the copy so it's not illegal as it counts as a backup copy now)

There are Steam hacks, but the problemw ith Steam is, if they think you are breaking terms and services they can delete your account and your valid copy of whatever game becomes useless as you have to obtain another key.

There is an unofficial sequel call Portal Prelude. It's in version 1.1, the developers may be French, but they seem to use a mixture of English, using British, and American. There are some bad spellings altogether. I have mentioned this to the developer and he doesn't seem to care.

Here is an email I sent. I've just copied it from the last email I sent, the first email is at the bottom, follow up emails are at the top:

Quote:
Commentary: The translation has resulted in bad English requiring multiple reads to work out what is supposed to be said. Being spoken in French doesn't bother me. Subtitles in the gameplay is not an issue. Not sure how it get's the version number 1.1

To clear things up once and for all, no one helped us with subtitles. It was a small private project between 3 friends and we didn't thought we could have such a huge fanbase some day. Fixing the script would be a pain in the *ss because we'd have to record all the voices again to match the new sentences. Plus, the developer commentaries are really long and we don't have any more time to offer to this project.

Hi Keith,

Sorry for the delay, I had work to do.
Here are my answers to your concerns.

Keith a écrit :

I have recently downloaded the mod for Portal. I have a couple
of issues.

1) The commentary subtitles - I think some more work needs to
be done, there are a few errors I have spotted so far.

As we said in the first commentary node:
"by the way, please forgive my english if it's sometimes awkward,
as it's not my mother tongue"
I think it's better to have a mispelled english rather than no
english at all ^^

I don't mind the French but the English in some places of the translation almost makes no sense

2) An English version would be ideal, but the subtitles in
English need work to flow properly (spelling and grammar needs
more work)

Well no, that's not on our plans.
Developer commentaries have always been in the developer's
language, we (french) always had english commentaries with Valve,
you'll have to stick to french for our own ^^

I am not sure who helped with the English subtitles, but I think that needs more work

3) The voice acting needs more work, there is no feeling in it.

This is because computer generated voices can't have emotions.
And this is because we didn't had enough time to record voices and
such (it's all explained on the website and in the commentaries).

4) There was one map, I felt slightly irritated at, with a
platform at an angle, I could only fire a portal at it in a
certain location. A bigger target would be ideal

Well, maybe, but without any hint on the map, I can't do anything.

5) Stopping commentary on demand doesn't seem to work

This is not a problem we can do something about.
The engine was made by Valve, we can't do anything about this.

I do like the changes though
1) Flushing the toilet joke - I like it
2) Using Orange/Red Portal first
3) The trick moving wall; where in the original, the one that
is moved furthest should be used. I fell for it. That was good

I've not completed it yet, but already I see a few things as I
mention.

Sincerely,
— Nicolas "NykO18" Grevet
