The main reason I bought a 3DS XL was because my friends all have the original 3DS, and the face buttons feel very mushy to me...and glossy finish + bare hands = eternal fingerprints. The large screen was a nice novelty for a while, but I get tired of this big, bulky thing that's hard to hold in bed, weighing down my pocket during travel, and sometimes I feel like I'd rather have nice, crisp pixels over big fat ones.
Also, the faceplates seem like a really cool idea, and hopefully not the "here's two colors to choose from" dust traps that the Game Boy Micro had.
First of the XL is great system for those who have big hands.
It is also the best selling model in North America.
The n3DSs have glossy finishes now.
As for face plates, American retailers hate them with a passion and generally refuse to stock them.
They just don't sell well enough to stock them.
Americans buy everything but face plates.
They didn't buy them for cell phones, certain laptops, GBA Micro, Xbox 360, and they aren't doing too hot for PS4 either (yes you can buy face plates for PS4 via Sony's site).
