I just want to know what the big deal about this game is, and why is it called a RPG?
All the gameplay pics and videos I have seen tells me that it is a first-person shooter.

1) Once you leave the vault, gameplay becomes non-linear and open-ended... you can go wherever you want in the game world, much like Oblivion...

2) The game is about completing quests, both the main quest and a whole bunch of unrelated quests, as well as exploring around...

Have a number of entrances incase you need to creep out of the back, or possibly, if you were to put windows in the vault you could view out, and fire at people from inside your vault, which would be a pretty good spot for aiming practice...

I currently have an armory for the vault which is capable of fully arming at least 12 men plus 8 men who would be equiped with power armor. I also plan on adding some sentry turrets inside the vault and outside the vault door.

As for having a number of entrances, I've contemplated it, but I don't really see the need. The vault door will hold against anything and if the inhabitants want to go outside they have enough firepower to do so safely. I might add a teleporter to one of the lower levels though. As for the window idea, I like it, unfortunately there isn't a model that has exterior vault windows. Mabye I should build a compound outside of the vault door which could easily be used once the vaults inhabitants decide to open the vault? I'll post some pictures of possible compounds which can be built outside the vault later when I get home.

W8 are u plying it with a mod...??? i didnt know you could own a vault!~! !! ! 8O

It's a gun that shoot 8 nukes at once, compared to the fatman it's better.

Does it have a engaging story?

If you stick to the main quest, it stays fairly engaging. However, there is a lot out there to explore that is NOT related to the main quest.

With Bethesda RPG's, the best thing to do is play through twice, first focusing on the main quest only so that it plays like a normal linear game, then a second time doing as much elsewhere as you can for the greater experience... On the games that continue after the main quest is over, such as the TES games, you can just proceed from the main quest to everything else, but otherwise start a second play-through...

Sorry for the late response (been busy) but yes I am playing it with a mod. I've (nearly) completed my own vault which the player can move into. When I finish the mod, I hope to have a vault which has its own inhabitants and quest line. If you're interested I can post some screenshots of what I've done so far.

The MIRV is overkill >.> I prefer my trusty desert eagle. It stops deathclaws in their tracks.

The main quest is extremely engaging, as are all of the other side quests. I'm on my 4th play through now and I intend to make a 5th character soon. It's a fairly open ended game with plenty of choices. You can play a good character and help people, or you can choose to be evil and simply take whatever you want. Not to mention the diversity of play styles. You can be a ninja/assassin, smooth talking peace lover, heavy weapons specialist, slaver, the immersion is endless.

I'm on my second play through at the moment, going for evil karma this time. I'm currently doing the slaver quests, man I feel guilty about enslaving Red after saving her from the super mutants... Being evil does have it's rewards though, I'm still pretty early in the game, but I managed to ambush several Brotherhood outcast patrols and loot their gatling lasers and laser rifles, much better armament than I had in my good karma play through at this point.

Just a few quick notes:

It's NOT Oblivion with guns, the play style is totally different, the leveling is totally different, the look is completely different, it is a distinct game on it's own.

It IS an RPG, though you may see the game from an FPS viewpoint, behind all the shiny graphics are tumbling dice dependent on your stats. The V.A.T.S. mode even allows you to take the human element out of the shooting if you wish, for a full RPG style experience, but some skill at the FPS genre is still useful for combat. The last really good FPS/RPG I can remember was the first Deus Ex, and I'd say that this is a far less linear and more complete game than that one.

The story is very non-linear, you can skip almost half of it if you know where to go from the start, and there are usually multiple ways to do each section of the quest. There are also numerous side quests and free form quests that you come across as you wander the wastes, I doubt I've seen half of it and I'm midway through my second play through.

I'm extremely evil in this game, it all started when I was about to take the GOAT test and I knocked out the overseeres daughter, and now I just kill anyone in my way.

I told butch that I wouldn't help his mom when she was getting attacked by bugs, then I shot him in the face until his head fell off and tried to show it to his mom, who was apparently already dead when I walked into the room.

Yea, I'm a sick person.

God I love this game! I can't even complete it, I just make a new char. every time I reach level 10-12 hahaha... So addicting. Anybody get word of the new expansions coming out for it? I think they come out this month, if they have not already. A new state is to be added, and uhm... something else... maybe another thing too. I only read the news once, but it looks promising!

you know technically it IS a fatman, just a unique fatman. Most weapons in the game have unique, and better, versions.

I am working on my second playthrough. My first one I never even went to GNR, skipped the whole thing. But I did do what is especially hard, neutral karma. Second one I'm playing the evil side. Soon as I'm done with quests in a place I slaughter everyone inside. I steal all I can, shove mines in peoples pockets, and feast on human flesh. Though I began noticing a few immersion breaking moments. Like when the mayor of little lamplight threatened me, and well this actually illistrates my issue.

oh and if you enjoy the RPing aspect, on another forum I go to we do whats called "let's play" where we discuss and vote on what they character does and the GM crafts a story around these choices. Here is a link if you want to check it out
