On my fourth try through the Great Palace from the starting castle, I found the firebird boss(I think it's called Thunderbird, but hey, it spits fire everywhere) a bit more possible through casting shield, jump, and reflect(and thunder on the boss). Almost nowhere is reflect mentioned in any guide on gamefaqs, but it deflects about half it's connecting attacks, which was just enough for me to run it through while still in possession of four of eight health squares for getting to and through the final boss.
