Newbie here at chess, but from what I've read and understand, wouldn't that give an irreversible advantage to white, immediately conceding the center, since white's next move would be d2-d4?

A slight advantage, rather than an irreversible advantage. It's not quite as bad as it looks and has a certain surprise value. The late English GM Tony Miles famously used it to beat Karpov.

Yes, that's the game.

Well spotted!!

Just been playing 1...a6 a few times in 1-minute chess on ICC myself as a tribute to Tony.

I used to play it and study it a little. Now I will play someone if asked but have no real interest anymore.

I love the game but I'm terrible at it. Not for lack of trying either...

I play chess... Started young maybe 5 or 6, ranked 3rd in state while i was in my high school chess club. (was on for one year)

I haven't played in about 2 years due to lack of players in my area and me being a bit of a hermit now.

I learnt to play chess when I was young from my dad. I have an electronic chessboard that can play with you, telling you where to move his pieces. Very complicated, and good to get a chess game whenever you wat :D .

hows this for sicillian defense!

1. e2-e4 c7-c5
2. g1-f3 d7-d6
3. d2-d4 c5xd4
4. f3xd4 g8-f6
5. b1-c3 a7-a6
6. f1-c4 e7-e6
7. h2-h3 h7-h6
8. o-o f8-e7
9. c1-e3 d8-c7
10. c4-d3 o-o
11. c3-e2 c8-d7
12. d1-d2 e6-e5
13. d4-b3 b8-c6
14. f2-f4 a8-c8
15. a2-a3 b7-b5
16. f4-f5 f8-d8

how should white attack or did white miss the chance to attack by being too passive?

Not too bad so far.

7. h3 is unusual but playable. 7...h6 looks pretty strange to me - played in 4 games in my 2008 database (3 white wins, 1 black win). 8. g4 might have been considered.

Yes, I think White's 10th and 11th moves looked too passive. Black missed the chance to break with d5 on move 15 or 16. All this according to Fritz 11 and Rybka 2.3.

Don't trust me though - I'm a teacher & writer more than a player. I don't play the Najdorf with either colour myself: too hard for me to understand.

What is this anyway? - email or postal game?

I'm fairly amateur, but I could probably be better if I played to win.

I play under the name King Mob over at redhotpawn.com, and would be pleased to play against any folk from wrong planet who also play on that site.

As a side note, for those looking for a place to play chess online, www.redhotpawn.com is a particularly good site.

Hi there people! I'm spinpsychle on FICS. My computer's sort of run-down and can't handle Java, but I got it real cheap :) Anyhow, FICS has a way around that, and lots of good games with little spam, so I play on there.

That notation system his game used - listing departure square and arrival square rather than proper short algebraic - is the kind you will see on Yahoo Chess. When I was on there last, I tried to see if I could change it and was unsuccessful.

Figured I may as well add my name here. Last I played in USCF rated tournaments, which was more than 30 years ago, I was rated in Class A. I've no idea how the rating system has changed, or even if it has. I enjoy the game, but beat most everyone I try and seriously play so I usually just teach openings and strategies instead of playing through, these days.
