Lately I've been looking through my games and trying to decide what I want to play. I want some kind of gun based game that lets me sneak around and snipe people but not really a "war" or "military" game. It's not a deal breaker or anything but I prefer games with monsters or zombies. The closest thing I have to this style is Resident Evil 4. That's what I ended up playing and am currently playing through. I love RE4 but I've unlocked and beaten everything. It has a nearly perfect mix for me. I prefer 3rd person-I like killing monsters-I like sniping things from a distance-I like having a large selection of weapons-I like lots of unlockables and secrets-the atmosphere is perfect also. Anyone suggest anything for me to get? Like I said it doesn't need to be spot on, just similar. I have DMC3, Nanobreaker, Punisher, Black, and Max Payne. Those fit into my standards for actiony kind of shooters. Anyway I'm rambling. Any thoughts?

I was in the same mood a while back, and I found that STALKER fits that description very well, though it's not third person (nor are the rest of these).

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth can be very sneaky/sniping too if you want, but a few parts in it are really hard to stealth through, and it's actually best to try to avoid confrontation as much as possible.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is another good one, though they didn't design the entire game to be stealthable. There's a few parts you just can't go through without being spotted, and the AI is a little bit too intelligent (they can spot you from a mile away, even if you're mostly hidden behind something). But I was surprised there was stealth at all...almost Thief-like stealth, you can make a noise and guards will come to check it out, and if they can't find you, they'll give up and go back to their post, and you can silently knife them in the back for a one-hit-kill if you plan it right.

I confess that this is not entirely fitting the question, but I can't contain myself to do a little advertisement.
The game "Stalker" was inspired by the much better soviet movie "Stalker" from 1978/79 that I strongly recommend to evebody!

The AI in black is entirely too intelligent. I don't know why you're even given a rifle to begin with. I can be so far away that the enemy looks like stick figures and they spot me. Anyway, I've seen stuff about STALKER and FEAR. FEAR looks excruciatingly hard. I know it's difficult to find 3rd person shooters with the depth of a FPS because the best shooting engines are built specifically for FPS use. I think I like 3rd person because I have a character to point to and say- "That's Me". The faceless floating gun feeling is odd to me, but I can deal with it. I need to get a copy of "The Suffering". I rented it a few times and liked it. I need to hit google a little harder I guess. I've read about Dark Corners before as well. I like the Chthulu mythos. I'll look into it more. I didn't hear anything about another Castle Wolfenstein. I assume it's been out awhile just the same. Sounds like it's worth investigating. Thanks!

Well, Turok has some stealth/sniping, and monsters (mostly dinosaurs.) It's primarily first-person, but it sometimes goes into third-person, like when you perform a knife kill, use a mounted turret, etc.

I'd recommend Resistance:Fall of Man, but since it has you playing as a soldier, I don't know if it'd be a good fit. If you liked Max Payne, you might want to give Stranglehold a try. It has a similar gameplay to Max Payne, and the destructible environments really add to the game's intensity.

Though if you want something with that offers something with stealth, go with the Syphon Filter games for the PSOne. Its mostly action, but it does have segments where you need to sneak around. Stay away from Syphon Filter:Omega Strain for the PS2, its disappointing.

I think the biggest reason that 3rd person shooters are so unpopular is because it's so difficult to aim in them :x RE4 did a decent job of it, but it really disorients me having Leon on the left side of the screen, makes me feel like a left hander (which I'm not). I find myself using the sniper scope just to look around and get my barings.

It's been out a while, yeah. Uses the Quake 3 engine.

The nice thing about STALKER, BTW, is that it's so cult, that it went directly to the bargain bins...I've heard of people snagging it for as low as $3. Of course, I ended up paying nearly full price =/ Like you said about FEAR though, STALKER is incredibly difficult...I ended up restarting the game with the difficulty all the way down, and I still get my butt kicked. Maybe I'm just playing it wrong.

I've been meaning to watch that, I've heard it's really good. BTW, I think the movie is, in turn, based on a book, but I'm not certain.

I tried playing Deus Ex, but I couldn't really get into it. I was expecting a decent stealth experience, coming from some of the designers of Thief, but in Deus Ex it's actually really, really difficult to go unnoticed and even more difficult to not kill anyone (by the time you're close enough to "blackjack" them, they've already noticed you) :x Even sniping at them (with or without darts), eventually one guy would book it for the alarm.

One of these days I'll have to come back to it with a bit more apathy.

Oh yes, something to add, I've heard FarCry is supposed to be a lot of sneaking around and sniping at dudes...unfortunately, I didn't know that when I played the demo, so all I ended up doing was dying over and over @_@

I should probably try it again sometime soon...for now, I'm checking out Jurassic Park: Tresspasser. It certainly is a bit wonky, but it's really interesting. I can only imagine how awesome it would've been if they'd ironed out those few bits. I was really surprised when I came up to a raptor, and instead of him charging straight for me like a typical FPS, he backed off and sized me up for a bit, and kind of slowly followed me around before deciding to come at me. Scary as heck 8O

My knowledge of video games is outdated for at least one decade, but by your description I'd say you'd love the Heretic/Hexen/Doom/Quake series.

Not sure i this meets your requirements, but I really enjoyed Tomb Raider- Angel of Darkness. In it you're looking at the character doing things, not seeing out of her eyes. You can kill possessed skeletons, and have to avoid being killed by a ghost. You also get actual human enemies and tigers.

There's stealth, you can find things to pick up, and unlock costume changes. I don't remember if you can snipe, possibly you can.
