PS3 Slim at Guardian.co.uk

Itll be £249.99 in the UK and 299 euros in mainland Europe.

I was wondering if SONY were gonna to make a slim version of the PS3, like they did with the PS1, PS2 and PSP

If you own PS2 games that you want to play, I would assume you have a PS2. Why not use your PS2 to continue to play your PS2 games and get a PS3 to play PS3 games and watch Blu Ray movies.

... and that's an excellent point. For me, the answer sounds like what you would get if you cross a bag of "Doritos" (Nacho cheeze, plz) with a "Cray-1" supercomputer.

.
.
.

Which would give you "Cray-tos". Or "Kratos". As in GOW3 baby, YEAH! WO0t! They also have some other good exclusive content. Otherwise, I have no justification for the purchase.

Well, call me old fashioned but I have a PC. I can play nearly all of my old games on it. Some run a bit fast but DOSBox takes care of them.
Then there's the DVD Player... which plays CDs and MP3s too...

I can't see a huge incentive to upgrade from DVD to Blu Ray (Not like the jump from VHS to DVD). In fact, if I bought a Blu Ray movie, I wouldn't be able to play it on my portable player, the computer, the kids computer, or either of the other two DVD players in the house. I can't see why I'd buy a Blu Ray film.

I've got a PS2 which I can, if I wanted, play PS1 Games on it. I didn't have any when I bought it but now I do. One day the PS2 will break. I hope I'll still be able to buy a replacement PS2 then ... after all, I've got about 100 PS2 Games most of which I've never had time to play.

If the PS3 isn't backwards compatible, then it's a whole new games console and has to compete with the XBox and Wii (and PC) for my attention. I'd have gotten a PS3 already if it was compatible. As it happens, I've been given a Wii now and although I don't like it as much as the PS2, it's probably just as useful as the PS3.

Off-topic for one moment for a semi-related question: Gavin, have you ever gotten Star Trek Armada to run on XP? I've got Armada 2 up and going, as well as other classics like Dungeon Keeper and Keeper 2, but I can never get Armada 1 up. It keeps crashing. I've even tried running it as a virtual machine instance on a Win98 box!

Actually, I've never played Star Trek Armada but I've heard that it runs well on WinXP unless you have a Nvidia Geforce card. There are driver issues with that one.

I was so happy when I learned this! Now I can afford a PS3 and get Little Big Planet and Siren Blood Curse! I might even use it as an excuse to buy the Game of the Year version of Fallout 3 :P

Good luck finding one that isn't very expensive.

still too expensive for the few benefits.

you can buy a decent PC for gaming at about the same price (minus monitor but then again, the PS3 doesnt come with a tv :P ).

sony blew it with the ps3.

I've got the first 80GB model. PS2 games look great in upscaled 1080i HD since I use HDMI.

The PS2 console doesn't have HDMI of course.

Pfft, like this'll change anything.
I had absolutely no reason to buy the PS3 beforehand - I have no use for (and no interest in) Blu-Ray, they took out reverse compatibility for the newer models, the damn thing is still really expensive, and there's only two games out of the console's entire lineup that I even care about at all. And now they're pushing the slim model? Oh, puhLEEZE. Maybe when the PS3 finally starts getting some good games, then I'll consider buying it. But right now? No way in hell am I buying a $250-$300 console just for two games.

Sony seriously shot themselves in the foot with the PS3.
