My wife just texted me this photo after trying to start it up to play some Arkham Asylum. I have been half expecting this for some time as I estimate I have logged close to 3000 hours on this unit. Anyone with some experience who can tell me if this is definitely the end of the road and time to start shopping for a new console?

Oh no, this really is every Xboxer's worst nightmare  My heart just sank when mine did this, which has happened twice. The one I am using at the moment regularly overheats and gets 2 red lights  Shame that the 360 (well, the old one) isn't amazingly reliable.

As for getting a new console, that really depends if you want to spend a lot of money, or pay for the Xbox to get fixed somewhere.

Would you like to hear another story?

My roommate ran out and bought the PS3 when it first came out for something hundred dollars. I commented to him that he should wait. There is no reason to run out and buy something like this immediately because prices will come down, bugs will be worked out, revisions will be made, and so on. But I didn't press the issue because I could see this was an exciting thing for him. Mind you, the game he wanted to play on it wasn't due out for a few months.

A few months turned into a few years, and the entire time, the PS3 remained in the box.

When the game finally did come out, and he ran out and bought it, he plugged in the PS3 to discover..it was broken. He had to send it in and pay $160 to have it repaired.

That blows. I had the PS3 first but as soon as I bought the 360 it turned into a dedicated bluray player. It died on me a year ago after maybe 1/10th the hours of use.

if the red ring from overheating there is a last ditch trick. you basicly wrap a towel around it turn it on with wrapped in towel to reover heat it to resettle the solder on the board. xbox 360 solder for some reason tends to be crappy.

Or take all the cotton off of one end of two Q-tips and stick them in the holes in the back to prevent the fans from working. You can immediately see when it overheats, so you're a little less likely to set the console on fire or melt its insides.

I've gone through 4-5 360's but my ps3 which I purchased in 08 is still going strong. I'd just get a PS3.

Not so fast! What color is the light on your power supply after you try to power up? If it's orange or red it may just be that the power supply went bad, which can be easily replaced. Don't give up on it yet!

It's green :(

As far as a PS3 goes, see my above post. I have already gone that route and besides the failure of a very lightly used unit, I just prefer Xbox Live to the PS3 version by a factor of ten.

Go buy a new one ((with a warranty)) and send this one to Microsoft and get it fixed. I think they have some extended warranty program to cover the rr death. The best thing about electronics vs. people is you can always get a backup twin unit. No big deal with your online history, import your profile and you are good to go.

((I know I know I know it is the money but in the big picture you can skip a dinner here or there, or other entertainment and have enough for a console in no time))

Yeah, going to go pick one up at the big box store on Friday. This was an original unit with a really small HD anyway. Really looking forward to the added space of a 250GB :) I understand they have upgraded the chipset since 2005 as well. Will I really be able to tell a difference?

I think you are going to see a performance improvement. The xbox gets warm, hdd gets full, performance has to be affected. It will be interesting if you see a significant difference. Please post it if you do, I'd like to know. I'm all into the hardware differences/similarities between all the consoles.

Will do. I have read somewhere that the new "Jasper" chipset is in the newest model, though I have no idea what that means :)

First, make sure that Microsoft will not fix it for free. They fixed mine even though my warranty ran out. If they will not, I would recommend buying the new "Xbox 360 slim". In the mean time, use the towel trick on your old one.

Thanks, but I am not really sure what the "towel trick" is. I am content to just go out and buy a new one. This one served me well for 5 years and I don't really expect Microsoft to replace it or repair it. Even if they would, I am not willing to wait several weeks to ship it out and get it back when a new one is only 300 bucks and comes with 10 times the hard disk space. :)
