I just started playing Advance Wars (the original released in 2001) today, and I'm enjoying it so far. I've been doing some other stuff today too, so I haven't gotten all that far into it (I have two training missions left). To all the people who have played/do play this, what are your favorite tactics?

So far, I really like distance units and air units. Being able to completely destroy or cripple your opponent's forces before they can even touch you is awesome.

In the campaign I find Max to be the best to use for quick completion. Sami is good if you don't care about finishing quickly, and have a lot of factories to churn out bazooka troops.

I liked the original a lot, but didn't like the changes brought about in the second one and in the first DS iteration especially. The balance of the first GBA game was spot on and the sequels offset that balance with super-powerful troops, which devolved the game into trying to be the first to churn them out.

The second DS game is also excellent, although it isn't as charming as the original.

If you like Advance Wars you would probably like another game the developers made, the first Fire Emblem game on the GBA. It is the best in the Fire Emblem games on the GBA/DS. Gameplay is similar but has RPG elements, and an engaging plot with interesting characters.

Advance Wars 2 is better than Advance Wars, you have my words on it.

I spent time playing the original Advance Wars when it was new, but I never quite finished it. Probably because it was on the old non-backlit GBA. However, I played through Battalion Wars 2 for Wii which is part of the same Nintendo series of course.

I liked it, but by the time I finally finished all the stupid forced training missions, I kind of lost interest =/

I think I did eventually come back to it and beat a few of the missions.

I'm still kind of irked that they broke the [console] Wars tradition by not naming the DS ones "DS Wars".
