1. How do I get past Steam to play the game? I haven't played the game in a long while, and when I click on the "Half-life 2" icon on my desktop, it loads me into Steam. I sign on, hoping to be able to play my game, and all I get when I login is a bunch of advertisements for Valve games and some online gaming multiplayer stuff. I just want to play Half-life 2, but I don't see any button that allows me to do simply that.

2.I have never been able to finish the game. This is because at one point in Nova Prospekt, when I am about to get past the big trash compacter to go to the next level, the game crashes and I end up back in Windows. I don't know why this happens, and I would really like to finish what is a really good game. Is there any solution to this?

Go to the "My Games" tab once your in Steam, and it should be there.

Also, make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date and HL2 is patched (should be automatically if you're playing through Steam.)

yep this. Under status the game should say "100%- Ready", right click the game there and choose "launch game",

Also if your PC is safe, you are the only one that uses it or w/e you should just let steam remember your password. Generally not a problem to do this unless you really don't trust someone else that is using your PC.

Honestly, it's only boring and downhill from there =/

But I guess it kind of gives you a good feeling inside, knowing you stuck it through anyway and finally completed it.

Ep1 is more of the same =(

Ep2 is a lot better.

Steam will always advertise new games. I think there is an option to disable these. If you're having problems with running the game, you could try the following:

Verify integrity of cache files
backup game saves and delete and re-install the game
and the classic, make sure resource munching applications are closed/disabled.
Another method is to lower graphic/detail quality along with sound
