Most racing games today are too similar to each other in my opinion. It's either a Gran Tourismo clone, a Need for Speed-clone, or a Burnout-clone. Where's the racing games I want? Here are some racing games that I would like to play:

A serious automobile enthusiast's game like this:
-A humongous selection of real world automobiles like Gran Tourismo 4 had, but with more trucks and motorcycles mixed in (Like in Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition).
-A huge area to explore. Not a big city like most street racing games, but an area like Test Drive Unlimited or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has. The bigger, the better.
-Extensive customization options. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition's customization system would be the best one to base it on, plus NFS Carbon's adjustment sliders on the spoilers and body kits. And a paint job editor like in Forza 2.
-There should be several closed tracks in addition to the city. Dodging traffic and making sharp 90-degree angle turns again and again gets frustrating.
-An online component kind of like Burnout Paradise.
-Let me run over the pedestrians. Damn. And let blood collect on the cars like in Grand Theft Auto IV. I loved running over people and getting blood on my car! Now I want to do that with an 81 Trans Am, the muscle car with the most badass styling IMO.
-And don't forget good police chases.
-The ability to switch from arcade driving physics to simulation physics.
-And please, for God's sake, don't insult me with generic, recycled engine sounds! Each car should be recorded in real time and then use that engine sound. I heard they do it in Gran Tourismo.

Sure, there are racing games similar to this, but they just don't do it for me.

Oh, and put the Edsel Pacer in there, too.

I'm not calling out any programmers here, I'm just expressing my opinion on racing games as a whole. Any comments?

I think it would be good but also a lot of work. It would be cool if you could have a nice, proper house, a trophy room where you could place trophies. A garage you can store a select amount of cars. An official local race track or three where you can start out. Then if you get to be a pro racer they can just do the tracks and you can *fly* all over the world for em. Or be a pro illegal street racer :P

Then switch to arcade mode and mow people down and have awesome police chases.

This the sort of thing you looking at?

This isn't exactly what you're asking for, but have you played the original Carmageddon for PC?

I also liked Test Drive 3, though it's quite a bit dated.

Test Drive Unlimited sounds like it might be cool, but I couldn't get it to actually work.

Actually, I have played Carmageddon on DOS. The game is pretty awesome, even compared to a lot of games today, the car physics are quite realistic, and the tracks were cool. A game developer needs to get the license and make another Carmageddon for next-get consoles! Even if it was just a remake with next-gen graphics and online play, it would easily be racing-game-of-the-year in my book. 8)

I prefer Test Drive 2.

Why couldn't you get Test Drive Unlimited to work? I have it and the game is good, but is quite rough around the edges.

I don't know...the official Carmageddon games just kept getting worse as they went =(

At least that's what I've heard, I never bothered playing the third one for myself, just heard it was really awful.

I'd get to the actual mission part where you had to do a race, and it would just sit there, the camera rotating around an empty stretch of road. I pressed every button and nothing would happen, I just had to CTRL+ALT+DEL it.

I wish they would've just made a demo, so I could try the game out without having to pirate the full thing :x

Now I'm really in the mood to play the 32 bit Road Rash.
