S-1: I don't buy movies. The majority of them I only watch once. And I got a good place nearby that rents BluRays out for a pretty good price, almost as cheap as DVDs. Makes it easier seeing as how even through the picture looks awesome, it's not that much better than the DVD when the picture is good enough.
From what I have heard and read in several different places, the successor to BluRay is already in development, and to come out within the next few years. The players have gone down considerably, and I'd pay about $150. But why, if the disc will be replaced well before half of the new decade is over?

S-2: I don't play video games enough to justify paying for one, even with the great price tag we see now. I also don't like the controllers, I've played my brother's PS2 occasionally, and they frustrate me. It felt like trying to write with my other hand, I could get used to a different controller after a while and I had no beefs with anything else about the console, but there were a few bad first impressions.

And on the side, I find it hard to be one of those people that hate something just because it's popular. But the PlayStation franchise almost makes me feel that way from time to time. I love XBOX, and although it's always had its faults, I tire of putting up with the PlayStation fanboys. PS2 this, PS3 that. A coworker and I were once discussing the PS3 which had a week to go before its release. I simply said "I bet it'll sell like crazy!! Are you gonna get your hands on one? The 360 was hard enough with people getting shot for it in line--" Then he proceeds to cut me off and "Dude, I don't care about XBOX 360, PS3 is gonna be so much better." I couldn't even get a word in to explain why I even bothered to bring it up. "I know dude, I know. I was just wondering how hard it's gonna be to--" "I have a credit card!! Too bad Halo games aren't for PlayStation..." *facepalm*

I am almost willing to get a PS3. I enjoy the idea of free online gameplay, because again, I don't play video games nearly as everyone else I know and I don't like to have to pay for XBOX Live (I did once, and I used it twice).

My Point: If I get a PS3, I'd be getting a BluRay player a few years before the disc is succeeded, but I'm still getting something else in the same package. A "best of both worlds" kind of thing. I am willing to get to know the console's main feature as well, or else it would still be a waste.

That sounds resonable enough. Ps3 is a quality console and a functional media device. I'd recommend it.

If you're not going to be playing games, get a standard Blu Ray player. Not only are they much less expensive (I've seen Samsung players on sale for $99.99), but you can also use a universal remote to control it. The PS3 doesn't have an IR interface so even if you have a $200 Harmony universal remote like I do, you still have to use the PS3 controller to control the PS3 blu ray playback.

But see, that's the thing. BluRay Players are dirt cheap these days, compared to how they used to be. But with the PS3, if I feel the need to use the gaming function, it's there alongside the BluRay, and vice versa. BluRay itself still isn't worth it by itself with DVDs still reigning the market.

There are two PS3s at my house. I have an 80GB in my room which is mainly used for video games, and there is a 40GB in the living room which is used for movies. It has the PS3 blu-ray remote accessory too.

It's great that Netflix finally made their instant viewing service compatible with the PS3. :)

Don't forget you can stream from your computer to your TV using PS3 Media Server.

Blu-Ray discs are supposed to be better quality as the capacity is larger, therefore the video can be encoded using settings for 1080p TV's and every part of the screen having it's own dedicated pixel instead of having something smaller and being stretched to accommodate. If you're watching Blu-Ray on a standard TV, you will more likely see similar quality between DVD and Blu-Ray as the TV won't be able to display the video's native resolution and have to adjust

My brother in-law did this and actually ended up getting a few games for his daughter who is 6. The upscaling (dvd quality) is said to be the best on the PS3. I have heard of several ppl buying it just for the movies. I love our PS3. the bluerays look great on our HDTV!

the ps3 is actually amazing for movies and stuff so if you want to use it for that go for it. if on the other hand you want to play games i would seriously consider an xbox 360 first.

Exactly why I already have one.

But thanks for the feedback, people. I've decided I'll get one once I can afford it.

I even subscribed to Netflix, today. So that will make me feel a bit better about using BluRays.
