I've just finished a fan-made graphical point and click remake of Infocom's text adventure game based on Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I thought it was quite fun. The game is freeware, here's the link:

Has anyone else played a freeware game they've liked or enjoyed?

I'm quite excited to try that game now! I've played the infocom game but I'm rubbish at text based adventures.

wesnoth was great, not a big fan of the player base though

LOL causing quite a stir recently, and it's fine.

I find the best games are semi free, and by that I mean mods 8)

Really nice titles here.
I played Quest for Glory series a lot and the parody/sequel Quest for Glory 4 1/2 is pretty funny. In some ways it has a better plot than Quest for Glory V. Okay, it has some sexual innuendo in the game, not really suited for kids.

The site Abandonia Reloaded has a lot of free gems. There are a lot of remakes and fan-made sequels of games.

Ancient Domains of Mystery

Of course there are also plenty of "liberated" games that should be mentioned such as the first two games of The Elder Scrolls. EA has been liberating the Command and Conquer series slowly with each new release.

I love text based adventures, but, apologies to Mr. Douglas, the Hitchhiker's one is just frustrating. A lot of the puzzles are just downright illogical and take me forever to figure out (still haven't finished the game).

Though the Babel Fish puzzle was so absurd, it had me laughing out loud.

I see people have come up with nice examples. Another good one I tried a while ago is Flight of the Amazon Queen:

Also, I found a game in the Ubuntu repositories called Adanaxis. I became interested in it because it claimed to be a shooter in four spacial dimensions, although I was disappointed that the Linux version had a bug that caused a segmentation fault in one of the levels, which still hasn't been fixed. Here's the link:

Ah I take it you've been looking at the pictures in the game. They had rubber welly boots in dark ages finland you know.

Both of those games have steep learning curve's be warned. Aurora's learning curve is great big steep cliff. I've been playing 5 months and im still learning new things and new ways of doing things. As for Unreal world...well your gonna die in some quite undignifying ways several times before you get the hang of things. I'll give you some advice for starting off.

Unreal World

Start a new game in spring when you develop a new character you want to be a member of the Kaumolaiset tribe/culture. This gives you a well rounded variety of skills and you tend to be quite physically strong as well. The game has a structured mission based system to help newbies learn the interface and get to use all the skills out there. After that expect to do a lot of dying till you get to know the layout of the land

Aurora

Read the tutorials on the forum and the FAQ's. This is a complex 4x game with a lot of freedom to grow and develop how you like. I personally love it. But be prepared graphically speaking its basically a glorified spreadsheet in terms of looks.

Get stuck? Post on the forum. The person who created this game updates it fairly regularly so its very difficult to keep an accurate and up to date document on all the features. For example, the most recent addition to the game was a new technology field to genetically engineer a new species adapted for differnt atmospheric conditions, gravity and tempretures.

The next update will contain orbital habitats that can be built over worlds that require long term terraforming or are too hostile and costly to inhabit with a ground based colony.
