Still waiting here since the 1980's.
My all time favourite game :)

Well, yeah. It is. It has been for, oh, fifteen years or so, and anyway, it's only Braben; but ya never know. At least he still has the chance to make a sequel, which is more than can be said for some other games, like UFO, where the original creators don't hold the rights.

The original was one of my favorite games way back in the Apple II days. Hope this happens.

I'd love to see it with modern graphics and network interaction for multiple players but I'd still want to fly with just a qwerty keyboard - s x =pitch , . =roll [space] / =speed and most important a =Fire Laser!
I used to mainly play on an atari ST but have played on an Acorn and an old 286 PC, I also have a version that is not supposed to still exist on my apple laptop.

While the sequels came with, ah, a few problems, I loved having the real star map (for the first 20ly radius, at least) and the mindblowingly ginormous galaxy map (that had the occasional strange inhabited star system way out in the boondocks, which was cool) - my main hope for Elite IV is that it would come with a current galactic map, including all the known exoplanets... :)

Did anyone ever travel out to those really distant stars on the galactic map?

Like Betelgeuse or Polaris? It is apparently feasable to do so but I can imagine its a real pain in the arse with fuel scooping stars, hyperdrive malfunctions etc.

It would be quite cool to make exploration of uncharted space more expanded in gameplay.

A more interactive universe would be better as well. Were your actions could greatly impact on the economics.

But I guess X3 Reunion/Terran Conflict does this better in some respects

Most of the named "interest" stars are in range of Argent's Quest (jump range in the dozens of ly IIRC) and you could cross the galaxy in the Thargoid ship (jump range in the hundreds of ly) without the engine breaking. I did fly out to some distant places in an ordinary ship fitted out with fuel scoops and big drive but it was tricky to get far as you say!

There was sometimes a bug with the Thargoid ship which gave it a huge cargo capacity (64 kilotons? probably 65536-(kit fitted) ) so fuel wasn't an issue.

*wipes away a nostalgic tear*
