Has anyone noticed the level of violence that video games are offering these days? Microsoft spent at least a third of their last E3 press conference dishing out shooter after shooter. And why is virtually every MMO obsessed with killing and witchcraft? What happened to the "family-friendly" titles? Is it so hard to ask for a "play infrount-of your gandma" safe MMO that is fun to play?

I rather appreciate violent computer games - they're exciting.

Final Fantasy is a 'play in front of your grandma game'.

Violence comes about because games are about challenges, and challenges are mental, social or physical. Mental challenges are unpopular (why not just play chess anyway?) and social challenges cannot be represented in a computer game. Therefore Physical challenges dominate, and that generally means violence. As games progress, so too does the realism, and with it the realism of the violence.

Of course there are always games like Sonic, Final Fantasy, Zelda, and sport games, such as racing, which tend to be more abstract.

If you're not into these, what kind of non-violent game would you like to see?

I have to agree, there are way too many shooters. Enough with COD, bring out Timesplitters 4!! I'm not looking for an MMO though, because I've burned myself out overplaying WoW, and I can't go through with another.

Kinect is the new thing for family-friendly titles. I played it and it is awesome :D. The Wii, however much some people hate it, is the best console around for family-friendly titles. Good ones I mean, like Mario games. Don't be put off by the tons of garbage party games, there's better out there for the Wii.

I like the Wii, but I just can't justify spending $250 for a box, then $50-60 a game. I already have a computer and PopCap Games are $20 minus my 20% loyalty discount.

There is alos the challenge of reflexes and dexterity which as made the sucess of Mario games. In what violence constitute a challenge anyway? is it the challenge to tolerate and becoming more insensitive to violence... it's sick. Also, I am for more mental challenge in video games.

My favourite sorts of games involve both killing enemies and solving puzzles. Just solving puzzles ones are great too though, though they can get boringly hard.

I really like it when they can make killing enemies into a puzzle.

I can't justified Activision charging PC Gamers 60 dollars a game. 50 Dollars, I can see its justified. But really, 10 dollars more. No. That's unfair.

Gotta draw the line somewhere. :P I wonder if the next generation of consoles will have $70 games. 8O

Also, it bothers me that this generation has lasted longer than 5 years, the next generation is supposed to be about every 5 years. :P

I'm a fan of Mario. My first DS game was "Super Mario 64 DS". I can handle slapstick, just not senseless violence/ killing.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I find violent video games to be a great outlet for getting out aggressions instead of actually hurting someone. And I think it's funny when people complain about how violent games are "these days". Maybe they never heard of Splatterhouse back in 1988, for example.
