I have found that a fair amount of my spare times spent playing puzzle games. To a point of getting behind on my bills. I used to like such games as well, and I still do to some extent, however, you are correct in that, for the most part, they don't matter at all, except as a potential stress reliever or for the occasional intellectual workout.
Consider this. These games, for example, Sudoku, usually have a most optimal solution. But chances are you aren't going to find it, and wouldn't know if you did.
A computer can easily calculate it though. You probably like the sense of accomplishment that the levels or points give you. My roommate is like this. If he can do it without having to stand up and earns points for it and can move up levels, he becomes addicted to it.
You should find more productive activities to engage in. For example, karate has levels. Rock climbing has levels...or at least the routs do.
