Any hardcore FFVII gamers here?

What are your 2 favorite characters to pair with cloud and why?

I am not a hardcore player at all. But my favourite characters to pair with Cloud are Tifa and Barrett, and that's only because I enjoy the characters more than the others.

It's been a while since I played FFVII but to my recollection the only distinguishing feature between characters was their limit breaks. So if you want to make an ideal party based on that you'd take that into account. Personally I preferred to use the characters most integral to the story, especially since FFVII isn't a game that requires much in the way of min/maxing. So for me, it was Barrett and Tifa, with Red XIII mixed in occasionally. I never used Cait Sith or Yuffie, they always seemed fairly extraneous.

Hah! I started playing this awhile ago, and it's perfect using Red Xii and Barret (with good stuff and materia equiped)

Everyone has slightly different innate stats but it is very minute and hard to notice. Barret has the best defense or HP I think, Vincent has the best magic stats behind Cloud and Aeris. Its really inconsequential though because you could load Barret up with magic and summon materia and you would still do fine. FF7 is very easy, unless you specifically handicap yourself. Use whoever you want, what matters for the "super hard" secret bosses is your materia loadout and level.

I think the best characters are probably Cloud, Barret (he makes a great tank and I think he's badass), Cid and possibly Tifa. I always liked using Red 13, Vince, or Yuffie. The latter has a really good level 3 limit break that hits multiple times and her ultimate weapon was always very useful for getting extra sources in the sunken airplane. Vince's is there just for style, even if his limit breaks are practically handicaps in themselves and Red 13 is cool too. I just like how he looks. Barret is also worth mentioning because you can utilize a very cheap trick with his ultimate weapon, depending on how much you like to grind. Load it up with mastered materia and it will do A LOT of damage, I believe he can one shot emerald weapon using an "overflow" trick. Vincent can do the same with his own ultimate weapon, but I imagine its probably easier with Barret since you can just get a high growth rate weapon and slap a ton of all materia on it while fighting magic pots in the northern cave.

Red XIII is good for magic... and for goodness sake, before the fight with Sephiroth, make sure you protect your party against Confuse - if just one party member is inflicted with Confuse the whole party will suffer for it.

If all you care about is min-maxing while having to put the least amount of effort into the damage you do then Cloud, Cid and Yuffie are probably the best party. Cloud and Cid also have two 3X materia growth weapons while Barret ,Vincent and Tifa's ultimate weapons depend on you purposely trying to manipulate the game. Its kind of easy to do this with Barret since its easy to level materia but probably harder for Vincent (its based on how many kills he has) and Tifa (based on how many times you miss the slots on her limit break). Conformer is the best ultimate weapon too, for reasons I pointed out in my other post. Red 13 is pretty good too, but his final limit, like Yuffie's, is pretty terrible and his other one (level 3 I think) hits 5 times.

That's just my educated opinion, the game is easy as hell no-matter who you use.

He's balanced all around, I think. His magic bonus is lower than Vincent's who is second only to Aeris.

Whilst characters have innate stats, it's fairly easy to build the stats you need should you so desire by morph farming enemies in the Sunken Gelnika. Doing this nets you stat boosting items.

Speedrunnners use Aeris , Cloud, Tifa in Disc 1 and later on varying parties with Tifa, Cid, Cait Sith, Cloud.

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. Steam also has community features, automated game updates, in-game voice and chat functionality. (from wikipedia)

Its nice FF7 will be available to people on steam but if you've played it before there's nothing to get excited about. Just achievements (big whoop) and some what sounds like an ingame cheating device if it wasn't easy enough already.

If you have their lv4 breaks, Cloud, Barret and Cid will pretty much outstrip everyone else in terms of raw damage. But honestly, the materia system is pretty flexible. So you can have pretty much use anyone you want.
