Does anyone here experience FPS cognitive issues?
Besides me that is?
I have been playing FPS games (Currently Battlefield 3) for about 2 years now. I seem to have issues with getting disoriented, issues aiming, and a lot of delayed reactions and a huge startle reflex. Not to mention tons of other issues... Maybe I am a gluten for punishment as I STILL love the games...
As we all could guess - my K/D ratio is so very dreadful.
I really am curious to know if this is common among aspies... or if I am flying solo here....
I've been playing FPS's for years; go all the way back to Doom, Hexen, Quake, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem to my current favourite, Fallout New Vegas. I haven't had aiming or disorienting issues, though. I hope it's nothing serious with you. Maybe it coulde related to meds if you take those? Maybe extreme hours in front of the computer? Sounds like a job for a neurologist.

I notice I have trouble keeping up with others in competitive games like FPS's.
I used to play fighting games at the arcade, but I found it so hard to react and make the right decisions like the other players.
I still play TF2, and definitely do much better as a Medic, where I don't have to worry so much about aiming, and can watch different things.
I also find it really hard to melee. It can't be my computer. I guess it's "brain lag".
If you have a big startle reflex... then you probably shouldn't play Penumbra. Unless you really like being startled.
Thanks for all your replies
lol.. "brain lag" is the exact term we use. As well as 356K modem for a brain.. tho that one feels a bit ouchie sometimes as I always hated dial up lol.
I think it has to do with sensory issues... I have them bad. I am a bit envious of redrobin62 - I can only dream of a life where I don't get disoriented. Real life too - get lost just by turning around lol.
Really do appreciate the feedback!
I have issues with finding my way around and remembering where places are. Even entering an unfamiliar house can be confusing. Finding my way around the complex 3D spaces in modern FPS games is an exercise in futility for me.
I used to really enjoy Doom and Heretic as they had the auto map. I gave up once Quake came along and they dropped the maps. Without them I simply cannot find my way around.

Sometimes having too narrow a field of view can do that to you. I personally don't have that problem, but I know that some people do. You can usually remedy it by going into the game .ini file and manually increasing the field of view to something wider. A quick search on Google for something like "(game name) change field of view" should yield results on how to manually change the field of view of just about any game it's possible to modify it for.

@ RazorEddie - Oh yes! "Getting Lost" should be my middle name too. Was explaining to my boyfriend that all I have to do is turn around and I don't recognize anything... Real life or in FPS... however... if I go the exact pattern every time around Noshahr Canals in BF3 - I manage ok.. but turn around and go the other way or turn a bit to shoot an enemy.. I am completely lost and dead in a moment lol... **sigh**
@ VIDEODROME - If I play past my limit, I get headaches too... not every time I play, so I thank my lucky stars for that!
@ Zokk - I actually used BF3's in game function to change my field of view. That helped some! So yes, I think that is great advice for us that need to suss our issues!
@ oxjox - lol... yeah... knifing is NOT my forte! Usually I am the one who ends up going down... and the off time I succeed I am so stunned that I die next step I take for hesitating to move lol.
@ muslimmetalhead - No... not just you.. but I love them anyways! lol
@ redrobin62 - I don't take any meds anymore. Sometimes it is overload on the computer time... others I am simply having an awful cognitive day. I did recently go to a neurologist.... what a ehm... since I can walk on my toes nothing is wrong with me... what the heck that has to do with ANY of the issues I have or with Aspergers.. I have NO clue....
Happy gaming every one!
Gotta love this weekends BF3 2x experience points!
I've been playing computer games ever since I coded Meteoroid in BASIC on my Commodore Vic-20 and backed it up my my data cassette. (30 years ago)
I've been playing FPS since DOOM, Quake and Unreal. Never did like consoles, not enough control.
Sometimes I'll play FPS and other games every single day, other times I'll go for months and months without playing anything. I don't like how anxious I feel sometimes when I play. Sims 3, C&C generals etc never makes me feel weird, or overloaded, overwhelmed, Just fast close quarters FPS does.
I'm a sniper, it's what I do. I know you hate me and call me a camper, but I can't play "In the sh*t" I'll be of zero use to you and the rest of the team. Let me use my toys and my big powerful rifle and a high power scope, you just pay some attention to your minimap and I'll show you where all the bad guy are. I'll even shoot a bunch and totally demoralize their team mates as I pop them coming out of their spawn, from our spawn... When I do get "In the Sh*t", I'll be shooting people up close with my silenced M98, straight pull bolt and IRNV/Holo (I'll switch back and forth) or my M1911 silenced.
When BF2 came around, I became a pilot. I have 1000+ hours in the pilots seat across 4 accounts. I use a Saitek x52 flight controller, I used that flight controller till I wore out the trigger buttons. Had to repair it a few times.. I miss the way the J-10's and the F-35's used to be. My best kill streak in a round is 69. Aviator 7,138 kills 701 Road Pizza's 2,012 deaths 3.90K/D ratio 113 hours, that's one account..... Thanks to BF2 and echolalia I have actually said "Mobooboola" in public....
When I play, BF3, I can only handle a couple of rounds at a time. To busy, to much going on, my sound system is rather large so incoming shells ACTUALLY shake the room, to many flashes and lens flares. My heart rate ratchets right up, my extremities cool off, I get too ramped up and start shutting down. I have to take a break for a half hour or so, go make a tea, roll a spliff, go smoke it in the dark in the living room, stay there till chilled, go back for another couple of rounds. Wash, Rinse, Repeat. Some days aren't so bad. My twitch shooting is bad. I miss so many shots. I could play BF2 for DAYS and not have it that bad. Though sometimes when I'm on my game and focused I can quickscope or shoot from the hip, not often though. The artifacts in the game really really bother me, the field of view is weird, just trying to get the game started can be a huge PITA...
When we play together, Don't get shot and expect me to revive you... I don't care, I have other things to do, and well, I don't care, sorry.
The first FarCry game I was lost for weeks!! To much jungle! Till I got it all mapped out in my head, then I figured out how to get behind the invisible walls... I wasn't much liked on some of those servers, got kick/banned so many times. The single player game freaked me out! It took me a full year to finish it, friggin monsters around every corner... WTH?!?!? I spent so much time just wandering around in that game, it was visually stunning. The round would start and I'd be hiking off to the back-back-back forty, just to see what was out there and Finding ways to get to all the most remote highest sniping spots.
The second FarCry game sucked so hard due to the server setup... could have been a good game. Now we have a third FarCry coming soon...
I play a slower game than most FPS people do. I'm usually way out on the extreme edges of the maps where no one would bother looking. Still very exciting to me though.
Click Here for one of my BF2 stats pages.
My longest headshot in BF3 is 960m. If your on battlelog I'm TekhNeek. I don't play often, but when I do, keep your head down.
*EDIT*
Question, does anyone stim during the round, or just between rounds? I find I get so focused on trying to stay alive and trying to take in all the stimuli that I sit rock solid all the way through the round. Once the round ends, I'm bouncing all over the place.

Hehe, I used to be a sniper as well. Good snipers are ALWAYS hated, because they can be a righteous bugger to counter.

@ MarthaCannary - I have not played sniper as of yet. My boyfriend thinks that I would do best with it since I have so many issues. But getting me to try something new and "scary" is like pulling teeth lol.
<----- almost fell out of her chair when she saw headshot percentage
I thought I had a great headshot rate at 20%!
You may have inspired me to try at last lol ![]()

My favorite headshots are running/bunny jumping headshots or when I pop the pilot of a full chopper and the chopper crashes killing everyone inside or the ultimate up close noscope headshot which I suck at but makes my whole week when I get one.
I wish I could play more, it seems like the older I get the more the negative effects of playing FPS bother me.
So I stick to torturing my Sims in Sims 3 mostly.

yeah - me too. I used to have to really push it before I sensory overloaded... now.. I barely go out of the house and I am in trouble. Especially bright days. BF3's sun glare nearly does my head in!
Oddly, it is the shoot from the hip no scoped headshots I am brilliant at. My aim really suffers when I sight down! Yet somehow I catch myself sighting down often lol. Go figure
And down goes the K/D ratio lol.....
The only cognitive issue I have with FPSs is memory retention. I get completely lost in a level and will go in circles. This also occurs with other games that require memory. If there is no map, I'm screwed. I've been playing FPSs since the dawning of Wolfenstein 3d and Doom. Nowadays I'll play Doom sometimes but mostly play Call of Duty: Black Ops for the Nintendo DS. I play online with that title 99% of the time and I'm so addicted to it that I've pretty much topped all the leaderboards ACCEPT for K/D ratio. My name on there is Hush. There are alot of players on there way better than myself but playing the game daily will really push you to the top. The multiplayer maps on COD: Black Ops DS are really small so it's not difficult to remember them.
