I've never read the Dragonlance books..or at least I may have picked one up years ago. Is it the series with the one really powerful godly sorcerer or am I thinking of Forgotten realms?

That would most likely be Raistlin Majere. As for Forgotten Realms, that can also be complicated because there are so many powerful casters in Toril as well. In terms of power, some people like to debate such things which can be understandable due to so many different factors involved. What I like about AD&D is how there are so many characters with so many ambitions, personalities, and alignments. It was also alot of fun to keep track of their personal histories and stories. Also, to see how they would interact with one another in the world which they occupied.

My brothers have read much more of the Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman books than I. I have read a few. I really enjoyed The Legend of Huma; however, I mostly stuck with supplemental manuals and all kinds of other books which related to history and lore of Dragonlance.

A few of the books I enjoyed are: The History of Dragonlance (which has the heroes of the lance featured on the cover) It’s one of the more famous artistic representations of the heroes. (The campfire at night scene) Other books of interest included: Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home. I have many more in my bookcase but those are some that I really enjoyed.
