With PS+ recently I have gotten into fighting games. They have given away Virtual Fighter 5 Showdown and BattleFantasia for free. Of those two I like BattleFantasia better. I was looking at Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend and Arcana Heart 3 too and they both look really awesome. While games like SF4, MvC3, KOF XIII are not looking too good to me, but I'd still try them. I know there is also Skullgirls and the Naruto Storm Generations which looks interesting. There are also older titles like Tekken and Soul Calibur. Then a few coming out soon like Persona 4 Arena (also thinking of just waiting for this?), /\ Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, and a few others. Out of all those the one that I really want to try the most is Arcana Heart 3, but I hear there is barely any single player and the multiplayer is not many players so it seems like Blazblue would be a better bet there. Any advice? I'm overwhelmed here!

If you really want to get into fighting games and have the most fun with them then you're better off either going to an arcade(if you have one around still) or doing competitive online and looking into buying a stick of some sort. I tried getting into fighting games, SF4, MVC3 because an ex-friend was very serious about them and spent a huge load of cash on a stick (150$) and found out I hate fighting games and couldn't bare to practice for them. Generally, from what little I know, MVC3 (well..Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3) is really really fast and does not seem that newb friendly if you want to jump into the fray. SF4, the only game I was ever decent at (because I knew a few ropes, having played my share of SF2 and SF3 as a kid) has a somewhat better pace but the game bugs me for a number of reasons and I believe Street Fighter 3 Third Strike is superior. You can get the latter on psn.

I REALLY liked Marvel Vs Capcom 2 but its arguably more un-newbie friendly than its contemporary but it has the best cast ever. I think the Darkstalkers games are fun but the only compilation I know of in the West is the psp version which I enjoyed yet hated because of the small dpad.

Arcana Heart is probably a good bet, though I've never played it. My friend was very into the Guilty Gear and told me never to pick it up if I thought Blazblue was too fast (which I did). Of course if you just care about playing the story mode none of this matters but IMO fighting games are really boring unless you like playing others. MK9 had a really good singleplayer actually and I don't normally care about Mortal Kombat.

First thanks for your reply. I don't think there are any arcades around here anymore. Probably one up in Portland. I don't plan to play competitively (I am not a competitive player). I was also worried about the really fast thing, they sure look awesome and flashy and all that, but I am just not sure all the ones I'm interested in if I can process that info fast enough to even respond. Virtua Fighter 5 Showdown is slower than BattleFantasia and more of the pace I'm looking for (I really liked playing online I was good at guarding and wasnt so nervous as I usually am online), but the style of BattleFantasia seems better. I would definitely buy a stick if I really did get into them. Right now I am just thinking of what to buy next. The 2 games I mentioned made me think I may like they, but they lack something and the ones I mentioned the more anime ones from arcsystemworks all seem nice. I would like to play single player for story and to get use to it, if I did play online it would only be casual. This is why Blazblue seemed to me to be the best from what I've read.

Ya, MvC3 looks awesome, the only reason I said I'm not so interested it as the others is the 3 chars at the same time, at least in KOF its 3 in a line after each KO.

It is, to me Arcana Heart 3 at leas the theme/style is what really draws me but again with the lack of single player (heard there is some, just not lengthy like Blazblue) and not so many multiplayers I am thinking of Blazblue or waiting for Persona 4 Arena. I can see how you would think they would be boring without playing others so I'd like that option. I agree, but I am weird when I jump online I get so damn nervous its not funny I start sweating and all that like if I was doing something in RL. Its crazy I know.

If anyone else has any input I'd appreciate it, but it seems I've answered my own question? Not sure, but seems like Blazblue?

Sad to see no one else replied! I tried to find BB CS Extend at a few places and could not find it, ended up just getting a PSN card. So, I will be getting Arcana Heart 3 later this week (too tired tonight).

You'll probably enjoy BB:CS, it reminded me of Guilty Gear and the story mode was pretty good. I think Arcana Hearts 3 is a safe bet and Street Fighter 3 is very nice too if you just want a very fluid, quality fighting game. I suck at it but the stages and sprites are beautiful and a sight to behold.

Its a shame they haven't released a Samurai Showdown compilation, I always had fun playing those games when my family went to the beach and we'd play miniature golf at this place that had an arcade. I liked using the dude that had the pet wolf. I played an older installment on a genesis emulator a few years ago and it was still pretty fun and not insanely fast. I imagine the other games are similar.

Do you play on PS3? You can add me if you want. Same username as here just use a '_'. I was starting to have doubts about spending $30 on Arcana cause of what I heard about SP/MP and found a non Extend version of BB CS for like $10. So, now I have like $30 sitting in my PSN, but know I'll use it eventually. I figure if I like BB CS I can buy Extend online eventually for $30 or just move to Arcana.

The only fighting game I play on the PS3 is Mortal Kombat II that was/is available for download via the Playstation store.

Tried BB CS tonight. Didn't get far into the tutorial maybe intermediate? You have to do this Rapid Cancel thing that I cannot pull of for the life of me. Played for maybe 2 or 3 hours and after the first hour my arm was already hurting. Not sure I'm liking it there are just too many things to do really. It's funny cause when I saw vids and stuff it looks damn awesome, but actually doing it its not as fun (I know I didn't give it a lot of time, just my first impression). Weird though cause I was enjoying Virtua Figther 5 Showdown and BattleFantasia.

UFC? WWE?
Though I sense that your not looking for a game based on television programmes.
Though if you are thinking of games that have fighting elements but not fussed about having little choice of characters... The Batman Arkham series won't disappoint.

Are there any games with the pace of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, but the look of Arcana or BB?

Definitely get Skullgirls; it is only $15 off the PSN network. You will not regret it. Street Fighter 3 online is an easy game that doesn't need so much practice to figure out; that would be my other recommendation.
