The sort of RPGs I mean are mainly japanese ones in the similar style of game play as Tale of Grace or Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean 4 etc. I can't really think of a good way to of searching for them.

Only really old ones come to mind. Either there's been a decrease in them as of late, or I suck at finding games now.

Resonance of Fate was made by Tri-Ace... the same to make Star Ocean

Though I can't exactly remember if it was all that traditional of an rpg... I've not played it in a good few years :?. I just mean... it's turn based action, anime styled, gunplay... with random encourters. And the guns could be put together with parts that added bonuses. It was rpg in style... but there was little in the way of stat building is all I'm putting out there, though there were level ups and such... I think they were just level up stats based on the weapon you frequented with your character, and the gun upgrades where where the strategy was at mixed with personal battle tactics.

I enjoyed it back when I liked those kind of games more... though it was a rather strange game :?

The story itself was rather strange too I might add, though that seemed kinda Japanese to me... not exactly as strongly thought out as Star Ocean TLH

Chrono Trigger comes to mind. Earthbound too, if you're in to stranger stuff.

This is probably not quite what you want as I'm not familiar with Japanese RPGs but... I bought an Xbox 360 just to play this game and only this game. It's called Skyrim. The graphics are incredible, you can pick and design your own character. You can just roam the countryside and/or go on quests. You can be good or bad. It's all up to you but whatever you do, you'll have hundreds of hours of play time before you've seen and done pretty much everything.
