Not sure if it will fight your needs or not but the Fallout games are good.

Definitely my first thought too. Fallout 1-3 and New Vegas.

My first thought, when reading the topic title and not seeing the contents of the thread, was the Mother/Earthbound series.

But I guess they meant something completely different.

I have not played it, but Space Rangers 2 seems to be what you are looking for:

I also recommend Puzzle Pirates, if you are interested in puzzles and card games. It is a very addicting Java game with player-run economy: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/

By the way, together with Guild Wars, Puzzle Pirates is the only MMORPG that I sometimes go back to. Every other MMO I have tried gets boring after a while and I never come back.

Those games look like they have a lot of fantasy elements. I think the Pawelk1986 meant a Role Playing Game. I am really interested in this as well. I wish there was just one out of the thousands of developers who'd say "Enough of that hocus pocus and unrealistic stuff, now we'll make a true-to-life game that simulates reality in every way.

You may want to check out the Mount & Blade games, they might suit what you are looking for. They are a medieval setting, but not high fantasy.

So like Darklands, then?

Though it does have a dragon to slay, and other slightly fantasy-ish themes, it's mostly historical based (though even the fantasy elements are based on beliefs viewed at the time).
