I enjoy many 3rd person RPGs, but I find first person mode very confusing. I have no idea where my character is in relation to the stuff I see, and I find it really tricky to turn around, so I end up wallbonking all the time. (Only first person game where this didn't bug me was Portal 2, because you're playing as a brain-injured character, so I had a within-story reason to be wallbonking.)

Anyone else find 1st person mode confusing to navigate in?

I prefer third person to first person, because I feel as though I can take in more detail. So long as the game gives you the option to alter field of view, I can generally tolerate first person.

I prefer third person, but I can play in first person if I like the game. The problem is I tend to associate rubbish shooters with the first person, so it's much harder to get me to like a game in the first person.

What I really have an issue with is tall third person characters, who walk on the left or right side of the screen. I cannot play games like batman because of this - I spend the whole time craning my neck as though I could see round them if I try....

But with the 3rd person, the character is usually in your way of view and the camera acts annoying when you're inside small buildings.

I prefer FPS games like Half-Life, Fallout 3, etc. 3rd person is hard for me to control otherwise I would be into GTA and others of that ilk.

Only thing I prefer third person for, is when it involves melee combat, I hate first person melee combat.

Shooting games I can play in first person or third person, and tend to prefer first-person so I don't have my character taking up a huge chunk of the screen and potentially obfuscating things I need to see(or shoot at) that clearly the character would be able to see.

I found some of the older 1st-person shooters very confusing that didn't have a map or pointer on the screen telling you where to go. Perfect Dark on the N64 is a good example.

This.

I used to hate the early days of 3rd person games like tomb raider, before they brought in surface and camera collision detection.

Nope. I like to see what's hitting me from all angles when I'm playing a video game.

Seeing the character enables me to know where I am.

I got stuck at the first bit after you meet GLaDOS in Portal 2, for example, because I can't see if I'm walking off the edge.

First person is really hard for me to play, both due to lack of wish and perception. I get real lost in first person I rather have third.

Thats something I imagine you would get used to eventually if you play enough first person games. I for one have been playing first person games for over 15 years, so spatial awareness isn't an issue for me since I am used to it.

you could try something like Metroid Prime, if you have a gamecube or wii. The platforming sections in first person games are usually complained about, but Metroid Prime is more of an adventure game rather than a straight FPS, but they do useful things like when you are jumping between platforms, your character will automatically look downward briefly to help you see where you need to land without having to try and adjust the camera for it yourself.

I can't stand first person view when the player's character is a person. Simulators (choppers, airplanes, etc) I dont mind at all.

But on the ground? Ugh. First person is the worst. I much prefer third person view.

I like first and third. One thing third is good for is peripheral vision, most fps games seem to have quite a narrow view, is a bit disorientating. Only have the one game now though despite shipping as an fps there are a few third person views available via mods.. Also third person helps with trick jumps, wall dodges etc at least at first.
