I've played both this and the first one consecutively in the past month. Can't say why I waited so long to try Borderlands 1. Shooter burnout I suppose. I used to play Counter-Strike for hours upon hours when I was younger. Lost interest in shooters somewhere along the way. But this series, this I like. Loot games in general appeal to me.
Borderlands 2 has some improvements and also some changes that I think detract. More variety in weapons and enemies is good. More variety in locations also good. The structure of the missions is more extensive, but there are problems that arise because of that. I do not like quests that are constantly adding new criteria along the way. It's never just "go get this thing", it's always go get the thing then do this other thing and oh wait there is more and travel over here and do this etc. Hate that. Some parts of the game are long linear sections I don't care for. Tiny Tina's area needs a Catch-a-Ride station, that is an awfully large area to be running on foot everywhere.
The difficulty is inconsistent. Moreso than Borderlands 1 was. Some of those boss fights don't feel balanced correctly for solo play. I had to beat the Thresher by luring it into an area where I could hit it but it couldn't hit me. Thresher can't burrow much past the threshold of the door to its area. Lure it out there, stand behind boxes. Shoot. Some of that might have to do with my choice of character class though. I was playing Zer0 on the melee skill tree for levels 1-19. Realized that the scenarios in which I can use my melee damage were too specific to be useful and the corresponding lack of firearm damage made some encounters harder than they needed to be. Thankfully skill points reset is freely available and inexpensive. I redistributed my points into crit and general gun damage buffs and have been having a much easier time with it now. The marker ability in the cunning tree is especially useful. All i have to do is hit it once with melee and it takes 20% extra damage from everything i fire at it for several seconds.

My one complaint, is any gun made by Tediore, I will vendor right off. I just don't like the special ability of that manufacturer since I never pay attention to when I reload, or how it does it automatically when I empty a clip and thus never actually make any use of the manufacturer special. It also wastes ammo if you reload early.
I have a Tediore caustic shotgun that I like. The reload toss is useful when you're within shotgun range. I wouldn't want it for any other type of gun though, agreed.
Fun game!
