if you got a game that lets you make custom characters, or custom cars, or custom levels, or custom whatever, what do you like most about customization in video games?

personally, I like custom characters and custom cars best. I good one for both of these is ModNation Racers.
So, How about we make a list of our fave games for customization? whats you fave games for makeing custom stuff?
for me, here's what I like best out of the customization in ps3 games...

Modnation racers... for custom characters, cars and racetracks
saints row the third... for custom characters and cars.
WWE13... for custom SUPER-STARS!
Soulcaliber 4 or 5... for custom characters.
Tekken 6... for some custom outifts for default characters... I'm just renting this game from gamefly.
Midnight club LA... for custom cars of course!... traded this game in along time ago...
Dragonball Z (forget how to spell next part)... custom characters... I may buy this game agian, but used this time. don't know yet.

I can't think of any others... anyone care to add to the list? your share you thoughts on customization in video games?

I used to play the MMO game City of Heroes / City of Villains. It had a very extensive character designer template system. I really enjoyed that because in way this tool brought the player's own creativity to the game.

Lately Transformers: Fall of Cybertron allows you to make different combinations of robot parts and sort of make an original Transformer.

I also saw a little of this in Max Payne 3 multiplayer. You can use the basic gangster types from the game but add small customizations to them.

I'm not very familiar with Saints Row but I was looking at it in the rental store. I might look into it more.

But I totally agree that creating a character this way really appeals to me in games. I think the appeal is just being able to make something from your imagination and see it come to life in a way.

That was one of the best things about City of Heroes. Shame that NCSoft is shutting the game down at the end of the week and closing Paragon Studios. Switching to Free to Play apparently didn't bring in enough revenue from microtransactions. Worst thing about it, they are being dicks about selling the rights to the franchise to anyone else and asking for an amount no one would sanely pay.

Wow I didn't hear about that. I had only quit City of Heroes this summer because I was having lag issues. Yet, I also have to admit the game mostly became about grinding through Trials to get experience and the End Game content and Incarnate Powers. I think the game's main challenge was to steamline a way to form teams and they just didn't get it quit right. There were few mission teams anymore. I had a hard time finding people team up on a Giant Monster fight.

Otherwise, I might have considered DC Universe online but I don't have a PS3. I'm not aware of anything on the XBox 360 that is an equivalent to that.

Right now I'm looking at Saints Row on YouTube. I might give it a rental.

I like the simple customizations. They seem to be the most unique.

Midnight Club 3- DUB Edition (PSP)... I like making the license plates.. 8O
System-based (3DS)... The Mii's are used in a bunch of games like StreetPass and such.. 8D
Borderlands 2 (X360)... Really fun combination of an FPS-RPG console game with a full character customization option... Turrets are so spiffy :D

If anyone was wanting Saints Row 3 at a cheap price, THQ has teamed up with Humble Bundle to offer a discounted pack of THQ games, pay whatever you want, money goes to charity. Paying more than the average gets you SR3, current average is only about $5.30. Also comes with Darksiders, Metro 2033, Red Faction: Armageddon, Company of Heroes and its two expansions.

I think my favorite games for customization are The Elder Scrolls series. You can make potions, weapons, enchantments, spells (for some), custom characters, even the game's storyline is customized because everyone plays it different ways.

I've always liked games with high customization, but it also depends on customization options as well.

On the plus side, you can always come over to Champions Online, the game Cryptic crafted when Paragon Studios was created and Cryptic was dumped. For some reason, Cryptic's most recent purchaser, Perfect World Entertainment, has decided to limit the character creator for the first ten levels of your new character (they say in the interest of "streamlining"), but fortunately it only takes an hour or so to hit that point, then the full power of the Character Creator is unlocked. There are nine Archetypes you can play for free, with a metric ton of costume choices that are similarly free; it's possible to play all the way to level cap (currently lvl 40) without paying a dime.

You can also make purchases from the cash shop for more costumes, more Archetypes, even the possibility of a Freeform character slot (a Freeform can use powers from any power tree, although some powers have prerequisites - for instance, taking the Munitions power Gatling Gun requires, IIRC, three lesser powers from the Munitions tree, or five non-Energy-Builder powers from any tree). For $15 a month, there's the Gold subscription level, which gets you eight basic character slots (as opposed to the two you get for free), the ability to make any character Freeform, access to all the Archetypes for no additional charge, access to several more costume packs (not all - they still need to be able to sell you something, after all), a free Hideout (yours to keep even if you drop back to the free Silver subscription), $5 worth of in-game cash (Zen points) every month, Veteran Rewards (usually costume gits you can't get any other way) every 100 days, and probably some more stuff I'm forgetting.

Personally, I'm working on getting the wherewithal to get the Lifetime Subscription, for a one-time charge of $300 - that gives me sixteen base character slots, all the Gold goodies, and never having to worry about paying for the sub again. :)

(For examples of the customization possible, here's Happifun Security System X-4, a security robot designed by a toy company:

and Wolfwere, a wolf who was cursed with lycanthropy:

and Penitent, former slave of the arch-lich Takofanes, who has broken free of his master and seeks to atone:

and... well, you get the idea.)

I actually played Champions in beta, and purchased a lifetime subscription before launch, but then the very last week of beta they did a huge nerf to XP rates and combined with the lack of overall content there were not enough quests in some areas to get you high enough for the next zone without grinding mobs and it just made the game significantly less fun. I ended up calling customer service and explaining my dissatisfaction and getting a refund, and played for a month and quit.

Yeah, that was a famous issue. It's no longer the case. In fact, it became so much easier to level that with the On Alert revamp, they raised the minimum level for the Canadian and Desert Crises to 15, to make people play the Westside arcs at all - and that's now bypassable, technically, if you play the Smash Alerts (Alerts that award a chunk of XP, and a 15% boost to earned XP for an hour) and level that way.

Customizing is really a big factor for me!
I spend an entire week to get a character in Skyrim that I was happy with.
