DS and PSP are region-free, and I would still have to go through the payment-related difficulties of importing from Hong Kong (or other places Far-Far-Away) if I want Etrian Odyssey or Dj Max Portable!?

That sucks. It very much sucks. :(

What payment-related difficulties?

http://www.amazon.co.jp/ takes US$ and credit cards.
You may also, quite easily, may pay in any foreign currency with your card at any other site.

Places like http://www.play-asia.com/ specialize in international video games, are entirely in English, and take US$.

I've ordered from both without problems.

I don't have any trouble getting games from overseas. I use ebay, it's not all just second hand stuff too if that's what you're thinking. There are plenty of bargains offered by ebay stores which sell new goods. Just go through PayPal for all your transactions, it's a very quick process once you've done the initial registration.

And I REALLY wonder why anyone would ever want to buy games from Hong Kong. Hong Kong???? Are you nuts? That's asking for trouble, all you're going to get from there is cheap unreliable illegal bootlegs.

Ah. The case is that I'm quite ignorant on the subject of online payments. I'll check it out.

Edit: You confused me! I completely forgot my own point! Said point being that I shouldn't have to import from Far-Far-Away when there is no technical prevention to games simply being launched world-wide to begin with.

Well, there is translation, of course, but still...
And I know companies don't produce more than they think they'll be able to sell, but still...

I'm probably being irrational about this, but I would very much like to able to buy a game that works on the regional hardware, well, "regionally"...

Besides, if it sells in the U.S. it could sell in the E.U., and translation isn't really an issue between those, is it?

Well, for console games they have to convert the game to display properly on a 50Hz display. It doesn't sound like it should be that difficult but I assume it must be since there are quite a lot of bad 60->50Hz conversions (ie. Disgaea, which your avatar reminded me of).
