Why do I have such an aversion to joining voice chat in games?

Players I play regularly with insist I get a microphone and join them in skype or teamspeak or in-game voice. I have a mic but just don't want to! Is this common among Aspies?

I don't like it.

VC is tiring. Very tiring. Prefer music and typing, but I understand why it's preferred for raid communication. For easy group crap, not so much...

I have had two people give me microphones, but I find it very difficult to speak in VOIP, and this is true with people I have met and people I have not met.

I am fine with logging in and listening, but I am unlikely to find the cognitive resources necessary to speak in these applications.

I have to use it since I'm a slow typer, but I don't like it because everybody eventually finds out I'm physically female even when I use the voice changer and they never treat me the same as they did when they thought I was male at first.

I tend to avoid voice chat until I'm familiar and comfortable with a game's mechanics and gameplay, so I don't end up fumbling around with those things when I finally decide to drop into voice comms with the 'serious' organized players. After I get used to the game, then I hop into voice comms with people, and I don't feel so awkward.

I think its cool to find/hear a female gamer out there. I for one am not biased by gender- I just try to get along with everyone I come into contact with in games.

I need a 15 minute breaking in period before I talk on voice. Just to get used to people.

I hardly use because I have a 1.6 GHz Athlon Wal*Mart Special E-Machine. It is at the bottom end of being able to run World of Tanks so if I add VC in the game, I would compromise my ability to play. ;)

Depends on the game. Most games where players play cooperatively don't really benefit all that much. For the most part playing cooperatively is simply a bunch of people playing alongside each other. Even games that do require communication like Portal 2 or Tribes Ascend, give you ample tools to do that without voice chat. Some games, like Left 4 Dead 2 really do benefit from voice chat though. And some games I'd flat out dislike players who insist on playing without voice chat, such as in Natural Selection 2 or World of Warcraft whilst raiding or pvping. In the latter case I'd usually not let them join groups with me.

I generally used voice chat regularly when I was raiding in WoW but, I go through phases when I've had a lot of anxiety about it.
