I was going to try to finish a mission on GTA 5 and it ended up freezing on me twice. Which was odd because the Dashboard worked just fine and everything, then I go turn it on and I can't even get the dashboard to show, while getting the 3 rings of doom.

It really is a nice troll attempt on MS part though. Make shoddy hardware and then force people to buy a new one. Sucks for them that I'm getting a PS4 next month (hopefully) and don't really see any new games on line up for the 360 in the current months that I want. But I do applaud their shoddy hardware. Image

Ironically I was using my 360 to watch DVD's on and didn't get to finish GTA 5 and this was the one game I was trying extremely hard not to spoil myself on.

What always makes this stupid to me is just how incredibly random this problem can be. Some 360s last hardly any time at all, before they go bonkers and die like that.

Wheras others, for no apparent reason, just keep going....

I've never had one die. I used to have a normal one, for quite awhile, and it just never ever developed problems. I ended up giving it to my cousin eventually, and it still worked perfectly. I also have a Japanese unit, which is the one I have currently (and I had it while I had that other one, too). I've had it for quite some time. And I'm klutzy and irritable; it's not uncommon for me to swat the thing if for whatever reason I'm getting irritated at it, and twice now I've managed to drop a TV on it, due to my absolutely terrible desk setup. And it still works perfectly.....

I really just dont understand exactly what causes the RROD. I know the machines are shoddy, but then you get those that never die.... very strange.

Well, this one was my 2nd one and I've had it for like a few years. But that doesn't excuse the fact that it was most likely shoddy hardware and cutting corners on their part. This didn't really piss me off as much as it did last time because I kind of suspected this would happen. But was at least hoping to finish GTA 5. Also, I don't feel like opening it up and going through all the work to repair it myself (even though I built my own computer). Because the only thing keeping me tied to the console was finishing GTA 5 and then I was going to move onto the PS4.

As for the DVD's thing, I have a HDTV cable for my computer so I'll just use that to watch movies on my TV. (The 360 was more of a convenient thing, but whatever.).

Yeah, they ain't built to last. I had one that red-ringed several times and recovered on its own, but eventually the laser wore out. The only thing I can really advise is not standing the console on its side.

In most cases, with the original model, the problem was inadequate cooling. Allegedly, the CPU (I think?) would get so hot that the solder would crack and lose connection...curiously, a "fix" for this is to wrap your 360 in blankets, and get it hot enough so that the solder melts and re-forms its connection @_@

Wacky stuff.

yes, its a similar fix for the PS3 YLOD (the box and a hairdryer).

Fortunately the YLOD seems to be far rarer.

I really hope this kind of temperamentality isn't going to be a sign of things to come for all future consoles from here on in.

I've had 2 crap out on me as well, currently enjoying our 3rd ( first 2 I bought, #3 my sister's boyfriend bought off one of his friends ). I miss the old days when consoles, and games, actually worked properly without having to worry about constantly replacing the system or games just crashing over & over ( I'm looking at you Bethesda.... ) or having something you earned refuse to unlock

Well one of two things are going to happen. I either get a PS4 next month or wait till February and get a PS3. This was just sort of an ironic/depressing situation.

If you don't get a PS3 or replacement Xbox 360 you won't be able to play through GTA V. In fact I think you'll have a very long wait for another GTA game.

Well what are the chances of GTA 5 being put on the new Gouke or whatever service that Sony is planning for the console? I could afford a new 360 or a PS3 right now.. it's just a matter of necessity. I've pretty much played all the games on the 360 that I liked, and with the PS4 coming out this month (I have mild hopes that I can find one next month or in January or February.). One part of me REALLY wants to finish GTA 5 and the other part is like "Do I really want to spend the money on a last generation console when the PS4 is coming out?"

I'm more of a PS3 fan, but it sucks that your 360 died. You should get a holiday bundle that comes with an XBOX 360.

Well, theres an outside chance that Sony MIGHT make PS3 games (potentially including GTA 5) available for download through Playstation store on PS4 available at a later date. Its possible to get the PS2 GTA games such as San Andreas on PS3 through the same service.
When, or if that even happens is anyone's guess.

If i was you, I would keep my money for the PS4 and buy a PS3 later (if you must). Its always better to have the newer technologies where possible. You'll be glad you did when you're playing Driveclub, Killzone Shadow Fall, or Battlefield 4 and Watchdogs at full spec as they were intended.

Watchdogs is going to be very similar to GTA anyway. The primary difference is the cops and NPC peds have much higher AI. Oh, and you can hack CCTV systems and police networks to lose the heat.

Yeah originally I was really looking forward to AC 4 but it seems to be getting mediocre reviews. I do wonder how Second Son is going to turn out and hope the delay for Watch Dogs means they actually spend some more time on it.

you might be able to save it by opening it up and heating up the board with a heatgun and reseating the heat sinks

I have the opposite problem.

My 360 works perfectly fine, and I can't remember how many times my sisters have abused the poor thing. It just keeps on going, I swear. 8O

For my PS3, however, I'm actually on my second one. I had the 80GB fat model for a while until it zonked out on me, and I got a new one to replace it two years ago. Earlier in August-September, my newer one started zonking out on me as well. My save files kept getting corrupted, the screen kept going blank, it's been through a trillion update loops, and more recently, I had to wipe the hard drive and completely reinstall the software because the start up files got corrupted and my PS3 wouldn't turn on properly.

I'm still a PS3 over Xbox 360 person, however. You just can't beat the variety. And Sony is definitely a lot more gracious in it's customer support than Microsoft, that's for sure (well, in my experience anyway).
