The other week I found the original Sims Deluxe Edition at a thrift store for only $4.99. I was pretty happy because I've never played the first game on PC before, I've only played the Nintendo Gamecube version. But when I tried to install it I couldn't get it to run on my PC. I have a Windows 7 Professional, is my computer too new to run the game? I was able to install and play the Oregon Trail 5th edition I got last Christmas, so what's up with that?

Yep, some older games like that can have trouble running on a newer machine. The older they are, the more potential for difficulty. It depends on the game as to what kinds of solutions there are... I'm betting that if you use Google to search for the problem, there's likely solutions out there. It is the Sims, after all.... info cant be hard to find with a game that well known.

Its not the machine that causes the issues, its the operating system. Anything newer than Windows XP you will have issues running older games.

On my desktop, I have Vista and it isn't able to run Quake 4 or Doom 3 properly for this very reason.

You'll either need to get a older computer, get an emulator of a different port, or if you're deperate, downgrade your OS to XP or older. Good luck with the second option though as Microsoft don't seem to stock back copies of their older OS's and they certainly don't do software updates for them.

I don't know about Windows 8 but on Windows 7 I managed to play it but I had to run it as administrator or it didn't work right.

You could try installing Windows 98 in VirtualBox. This is a free emulator and it allows 3D acceleration.
