So Christmas is coming up, and my mind is split on what to ask for: Dead Island or Battlefield 3. Both seem to be in the style of sandbox games and I'm not sure which is preferable.

For me, that's a no brainer. haha no brainer....cuz Dead Island has zombies. lol Anyways, I'm really not into military shooters. I love the missions and open worldness of Dead Island, but you may find that fighting the zombies can be a little tedious at times. Still a great game, though.

Just want to point out, BF3 is more teammate oriented than other FPS like COD. The maps are HUGE and it's really team oriented which may detract from how you want to play other games. You don't have to shoot and kill to get points. You can supply ammo/medic kits, drive vehicles, spot enemies, launch mortars, and revive people via the defibrillator. It's quite dynamic and it may take some time getting used to but it's worth it when you get better.

If that doesn't interest you, you might want to go with Dead Island instead.

Dead Island is a waste of time unless you have a group of friends willing to sit down and play through the game with you. The game has very little to offer for a solo player.

I wouldn't go for either of these games really.

AVOID DEAD ISLAND!

Heck, I'll give you my copy as I don't think I'll ever finish playing it.

1. It's a game that promised so much but utterly failed. It looks nowhere near as good as the previews make you think it will be.

2. It's geared for multiplayer. You have only 4 characters, each with their own specialty. You are supposed to be able to play solo, but some parts really need at least two people to manage the waves of zombies.

3. Along with #2 above, the save game is bugged. It doesn't save and reload at key points. It reloads you with what you have left. So, if you die going into a fight and expend half your resources before you die, you come back with that, now what you had going in at first. This can make a part of the game impossible to beat (as it was for me), and as you can't load a prior save to try again, the plot is broken, and you must start from scratch.

4. The game is overall tiresome to play. Most games have the "go there and do that then come back and get another mission" nonsense, but Dead Island takes it to a whole new level of awful. As one critic wrote, by the time you get near the end of the game, you have long since stopped caring about any of the characters in the game. At some point you just start rooting for the damn zombies.

I don't agree that the graphics of Dead Island are bad. I've got the PS3 version and i've got to say it blew me away initially. Plus its a lot of fun punching and kicking the undead.

my main criticism of Dead island is that its very stingy with weapons and you'll consistently find yourself getting into unfair melee fights that you can't win. Especially against those zombie brutes, those things refuse to go down.
Early on in the game guns appear to be non existent. I chose the aboriginal woman whose special skill is sniping, foolishly believing it would give me an advantage.

As far as zombie games go, its better than Dead Rising 2. That game is just badly designed.

battlefield is definitely the much better game. dead island seems like it'd be fun but it gets so boring within the first hour and theres just so many problems with it, as if they didnt finish making it. i still havent played the second one and dont plan on it, the first one was just too horrible. battlefield on the other hand is pretty badass and as far as fps goes, its arguably the best
